Trust

“I don’t understand,” Remus whispered.

Sirius continued to gather his belongings together without bothering to explain.

“Is it something I’ve done?” Remus asked.

“It’s just for a while,” Sirius muttered.  “I’ll be back soon.  I promise.”

Remus didn’t believe him.  There was something in his tone that he rarely heard from Sirius.  It was the same tone of voice that he’d used when he’d spoken of his parents disowning him.

Dead.

Final.

“Let me come with you,” Remus suggested.  “I can -”

“No!”

Remus watched Sirius walk out the door.

Sirius had promised to return, but Remus didn’t believe him.

Sirius sat in his prison cell, cursing everyone and everything, including himself.

How had everything gone so wrong?

How was it that the one person he should have trusted the most, was the one he had doubted?

He gazed out of the window of his cell and nearly managed a smile when he caught sight of his namesake, the brightest star in the sky.

“Whenever we’re apart, we’ll just look up at the stars and think of each other.  That way we’ll always be together in spirit.”

He wondered if Remus was watching the stars now.  He hoped he was.

“There can be no doubt,” Dumbledore stressed.  “Sirius was their Secret Keeper.”

Remus slammed his fist down on the desk, toppling an inkpot in the process.  “He would never have betrayed them.  James was like a brother to him.”

“I know you and Sirius were close…”

“You don’t know anything!” Remus yelled.

Dumbledore looked at him calmly.  “Very well.  If you are right, what do you intend to do about it?  Sirius has been sent to Azkaban without a trial.”

“I’ll go to the Ministry.”

Dumbledore shook his head sadly.  “It’s unlikely they’ll listen to you.”

“I’m bringing him home.”

Prisons were generally designed to keep people in.  Therefore, Remus found it surprisingly easy to hire a tiny boat to take him to the bleak fortress.

The Ministry had been as pointless as Dumbledore had predicted, but Remus had no intention of giving up so easily.  He knew that Sirius was innocent, and he had no intention of leaving him to suffer in Azkaban.

As escape plans went, it was far from perfect, and Remus soon found himself surrounded by Dementors.  He reached for his wand, but it was too late.

Azkaban Prison was about to have a new inmate.

Sirius looked up at the familiar voice and wondered whether he was imagining things.  “Remus?”

Remus nodded and stepped into the cell.  The door closed behind him and he felt the familiar unease at being trapped.

Sirius rose slowly and moved towards the other man.  “You came to visit me,” he whispered in disbelief as he hugged Remus close.

“Not exactly.”

“What do you mean?”

“I meant to break you out of here.”

“You do realise you’re locked in?”

“Yeah.  As escape plans go, this one was a bust.”

Sirius kissed his new cellmate softly.  Thank goodness for overcrowded prisons.
