sixth-year dada

Remus probably struck a rather different tone than his predecessor Snape for the older students. Since they had had him before, he honestly hoped they would still be willing to learn from him, and had filled the DADA classroom with books, diagrams of various magical creatures and spellcasting techniques, and his trusty Grindylow tank, which now ( Read more... )

Jake was leaning back in his seat, barely staying awake really. The first week of classes he'd always been that way.

He was glad to have Lupin back, really. It was much better than having anyone else teach it. He'd seen a lot of professors for this class come and go and Lupin was his favorite. Lupin's little this-is-hard-shit "pep-talk" hadn't really helped all that much.

When he asked for volunteers and no one else seemed like they wanted to move, he shot a look down the row at his three best friends before raising his hand.

Someone had to do it.

"Yes, Jake," Remus said rather cheerfully. "Brilliant. If you could come up?"

As he waited for Jake to come up to the front of the class room, he addressed the rest of the class. "Today we'll be working on non-verbal defensive spells. Being able to perform a spell without having to say its incantation is incredibly helpful in that, if duelling, your adversary will have less of an advantage of knowing what spell you've cast. Being able to do so might buy you seconds or even milliseconds which could guarantee your safety."

He turned back to Jake. "Now, Mr. Anderson, please curse, hex, or jinx me."

Jake had gotten entirely too used to the way Snape taught this class.

"Uh, really? Just-" His brow furrowed a little as he held his wand out. "Anything? And out loud?" The only thing he could even think of at the moment was stupefy.

"Whenever you would like," Remus clarified. "And with anything, really, though if you have any particularly original spells I would certainly like to see them. And yes, out loud. You'll have an opportunity to try non-verbally in a moment."

He had his own wand out, but his stance was casual and her was twirling his wand cheerfully in his hands. "Whenever you're ready."

Emiko had been sitting quietly toward the back of the class scribbling little shapes on a piece of paper. She looked up as the professor asked for a volunteer and even thought of raising her hand-- though she did not. Despite any ill that could be said of Lupin, she thought he was a damned good teacher and actually liked him. Not that she would admit that to any of her housemates.

She looked forward to this class almost more than any other; she found it to be engaging and informative. She was already excited to see what he would do this class period.

"Now, Mr. Anderson, please curse, hex, or jinx me."

Oh. This would be interesting indeed! Great way to start off the new year. She watched intently waiting for what would follow.
