It all happens in a split second, but that was long enough for Remus to not raise his wand and to brace himself for the spell he allowed to be cast. When he'd married Tonks he'd had it in his mind that he wasn't long for this world. When he offered to join Harry and the others on their quest, he fully expected to fall in the line of duty at some point. If he'd had more than a second to think, he wouldn't have let Dolohov kill him so easily. But in that moment all the thoughts that his son would have an easier time of it without him, that he'd do more good giving his life for the cause, all those impulses won him over for just long enough.
The second he dies he's doing something for the cause, he's letting Dean win a wand after Remus no longer has any use for it.
Dean is very confused and shocked by the easy death, but wastes no time in taking Remus' place dueling Dolohov.
Sorry it's late, I had this drawn ages and ages ago and then forgot about it. Then I had to go back and change the background so they're outside (near as I can figure Remus died out on the grounds, might be wrong about that though).
