As for random people commenting on your groceries, or the rude student in your class, we all know they should be politely ignored. But I have to say I like that you put the onus on him to come up with something for the class to do if he's so unhappy! (Another option would be to see if he can transfer into a higher level English class, preferably one you don't teach!)
