I was a bonehead for Halloween. Kyla went as a vampire bride. It was really fun stirring the cauldron full of dry ice in my friend Angela's front yard and telling kids that all the stew needed was some children's fingers...or eyeballs. I'm really glad it's raining, because I do not want to end up like California, but I'm tired of getting cold and wet. Maybe we could have a day on and a day off? After so long so hot and dry, the cool wetness is hard to adjust to.

That's not to say I'm not grateful the drought has broken.

 My favorite new poetic form is called a minute--they're syllabic-- 3 stanzas of 8/4/4/4--and they are also written in rhyming couplets. Like a tanka and a sonnet procreated! Plus you have the built in pun, which is always fun. Here are a few I've written recently.

This is actually a piece I wrote for a writer's group I'm in, but I felt like posting it here first. It's hot today--and I don't mind. Yet. The chestnut trees are still blooming, and I'll be glad when they quit. My stomach is growling, so I think I'll leave the TRC lab and go find something to eat.

What Makes Me Remember

The trees this time of year-chestnut pollen

settling over the scent of oncoming rain,

river water dense with fish and floats,

the clang of horse shoes hitting the pit.

Berries ripe. Cheesecake. Chips and bean dip.
