She'd kissed him lightly, comfortingly on his brow as she often did before mouthing 'I'll be back soon', and he'd always wanted to respond, but never did, not even with a grunt or a nod: the simple reverence of what even a dog would oblige to its owner. He couldn't. He tried, oh yes, he /tried/. Once he even made the effort to stammer the words 'I will--', but clammed up when he realized he didn't know her name.
