“Can I come in?” Donghae asked.
“Uh, sure,” Kyuhyun stepped aside.
Donghae approached Sungmin’s bed, “Hyung…” He turned to Kyuhyun, “Umm…”
“Ah… Sorry for not introducing myself. My name is Cho Kyuhyun. I’m Sungmin’s boyfriend.”
“Kyuhyun-ssi, how is my brother?” Donghae asked, and Kyuhyun told him about Sungmin’s condition.
Donghae turned to Sungmin and held his hand, “Hyung, I know you are a strong person, you can make it and wake up, I just know it. I’ve finally found you after 10 years, but I didn’t want see you like this hyung… I want to talk to you the way we used to when we were young; laughing, crying, and dreaming about our future,” Donghae cried, reminiscing about their childhood. “I expected to find you in a better condition than this hyung, but if this is fate, then I want you to wake up, to live and be happy, hyung. I’m sorry I couldn’t help you 10 years ago. All I did was cry when I saw you walking away. I didn’t have the strength to make you stay, to change Appa's mind. I really am sorry, hyung, so please… wake up.”
After a few minutes, he stopped crying. “Umm… Donghae-ssi, can I talk to you?” Kyuhyun asked.
“Yes. Sorry for crying in front of you,” Donghae apologized.
“It’s fine, please take a seat,” Donghae sat next to Kyuhyun in the sofa. “I’m sorry if you think that I’m being rude, but are you sure that this Sungmin is the brother that left your home 10 years ago?”
“Yes, I’m sure.”
“But when he left your house, he was 12 years old. I know you don’t have his most recent photo, so what makes you so sure that he’s your brother?”
“I’m sure because his face hasn’t changed these 10 years.”
“How did you know that he was here?”
“Yesterday, I got a call from Hyukjae.”
Lee Donghae was a young businessman. No, he wasn’t an heir to a company; his father was just an ordinary man. But he finally accomplished his dream 2 years ago, which was to build his own company, and to be a successful man. However, there was one dream that wasn’t fulfilled yet, and that was to find his long lost brother.
Today was a tiring day for him; he had to go to China that morning to attend a meeting with some other businessman. That night, when he arrived at the hotel after the meeting, his cell phone rang.
“Hello?” he said.
“Hae…,” he heard someone sobbing on the other side of the phone.
“Hyukkie, what’s wrong?” Lee Hyukjae or Eunhyuk, was Donghae’s boyfriend from high school, and he worked as a paramedic in Seoul.
“Hae, I-I th-think I found your brother,” he sobbed.
“Where? When?”
“There was a car crash; I was one of the paramedics who was called to help the police remove the victims from that bus crash. And there was a boy who looked for his boyfriend, and when I asked for his boyfriend’s name, he said that his name was Lee Sungmin. After removing the last person trapped in the bus, I saw his identitation; his name was Lee Sungmin,” Eunhyuk explained.
Every word Donghae heard made him weaker, and he fell to his knees and sat on the floor. He knew he was crying now. “Are you sure, Hyukkie? Maybe that was another Lee Sungmin,” he said.
“I’m sure, Hae. He had the same face as your brother in the photo you gave me when we were in high school.”
He cried harder when he heard this. “Where?” he choked, “Where is he right now?"
“He was sent to Seoul International hospital and he’s in a bad condition. He has fractured hips and broken legs, and the doctor lost him a few times, but they managed to make his heart beat again. He’s still unconscious at the moment.”
“Hyukkie… I’m going back to Seoul.”
“But, Hae… what about-”
“Right now, I don’t care about my company. We finally found my brother after searching for him for so long,” he snapped.
“O-okay then Hae, I’ll wait for you.”
“Hyukkie… I’m sorry; I didn’t mean to snap at you.”
“It’s okay Hae, I understand your feelings. Bye Hae,” he hung up.
“Sungmin-hyung, I finally found you,” he began to pack his things. Lee Sungmin was Donghae’s lost brother. Eunhyuk helped him search for Sungmin everyday ever since they were in high school, and Eunhyuk knew why Sungmin left home 10 years ago. After he finished packing his things, he went to the airport.
“And here I am, in the hospital,” Donghae said.
“But, he told me he was an orphan and had no family,” Kyuhyun said.
“Maybe it's because our father cast him out of our home 10 years ago,” Donghae said.
Today was a beautiful day in Ilsan; little Sungmin and little Donghae were playing in the park with their parents watching them from afar. Since it was a holiday, their parents brought them to the park for a picnic.
“Boys, it’s time to eat,” their mother called. They went to their parents; Donghae sitting next to their mother and Sungmin sitting next to their father.
“Sungmin, you got good grades again? Wow… 6 years in row, I’m proud of you, but you have to study more to have good grades in middle school,” his father said and kissed his forehead.
“Donghae has good grades too, so Appa must kiss Donghae too,” Donghae said.
“Come here boy, I’m proud of you too,” and he kissed Donghae forehead.
“Time to eat now. Umma cooked your favorite meal,” their mother said, and they ate in silence. Their father always said that they shouldn’t speak while eating, or they would choke.
After they finished eating, Donghae and Sungmin played again at the park. It was afternoon when they wanted to go home, and when they started walking towards their car, Sungmin tugged on his mother’s sleeve.
“Umma, I’m thirsty,” he said.
“I think I still have a drink in my bag.” But when she searched her bag, there was no drink. “Umma will buy it for you, okay? Wait here,” and she went to the minimarket across the street.
“Where is she going?” his father asked.
“I’m thirsty, so umma said that she would buy a drink for me,” Sungmin said. “Where’s Donghae?”
“He’s in the car.”
A few minutes later, he saw his mother walking out of the minimarket; she was crossing the road when a car hit her at a high speed. His father ran to her and called for an ambulance. Sungmin just sat there crying, and Donghae got out of the car to hug him. When the ambulance came, they brought her to hospital. Sungmin and Donghae went home with their uncle. After 2 hours, the doctor announced her death. Their father came home and went straight to Sungmin’s room. He packed Sungmin’s things and threw it at Sungmin’s face.
“YOU! GET OUT OF HERE!”
“Appa, I-”
“YOU KILLED HER! IF SHE DIDN’T GO, SHE’D STILL BE ALIVE!”
“Appa, please…”
“GET OUT!!” he pulled his arm and dragged him outside.
“Appa, that hurts!” Sungmin whailed, but his father didn’t hear him.
“GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!” he roared. Sungmin picked up the bags his father threw at him, and walked away. Donghae tried to go after Sungmin, but his father blocked him.
“Hyung... don’t go! Sungmin-hyung!” he struggled, but his father was too strong for him, so all he could do was watch his brother walk away from their house, and from his life.
“That’s what happened 10 years ago. I’m sure Sungmin-hyung never told you this.”
“Yeah, he didn’t.”
“Soon afterwards, our mother had a funeral, and our father became a strict person. Whenever I mentioned Sungmin-hyung’s name, he always got mad. After school ended, I searched for him everyday, but I had no idea where he was. When I was in the 2nd grade in middle school, we moved to Seoul, and Appa asked me to buy him a new bag because our bag wasn’t big enough; I used that time to look for my brother and I met someone called Lee Minhyo. She told me she saw my pamphlet and she said that she saw my brother 1 week ago in the station with a man and a woman. When I asked her where their destination was, she said it seemed like they were going to Seoul. So, when I went to Seoul, I started to look for him again,” Donghae explained.
They chatted about their life and Kyuhyun learned that Donghae was a year older than him. Donghae said he would allow Kyuhyun to date Sungmin if he could make him happy and take care of him. And of course, Kyuhyun agreed to that. At noon, they heard a knock and Kyuhyun got up from his seat to open the door.
“Ah, hyung,” Kyuhyun said.
“Kyu, we brought you your things and some food; I know you won’t go to cafeteria unless we force you,” Ryeowook said. He and Yesung came into the room.
“Who is he, Kyu?” Yesung asked when he saw Donghae.
Donghae bowed and said, “My name is Lee Donghae, and I’m Sungmin-hyung’s brother.”
“But Sungmin-hyung told me he had no other family,” Ryeowook said, confused. Donghae told them what happened 10 years ago.
“Ah, my name is Yesung, but you can call me Yesung-hyung if you want to. And he is Ryeowook; he’s the same age as you,” Yesung said, and Ryeowook smiled at Donghae.
“Kyu, we have to go. Yesung-hyung has to go to his concert this afternoon for his rehearsal.”
“Ok, then.”
“Oh, Kyu, call us if anything happens,” Yesung said, and they left the room.
Donghae stayed with Kyuhyun until nightfall. They kept talking until a nurse came in and told them that visiting time was over.
On the 7th day after the accident, Sungmin was still unconscious, and everyday, Donghae would come with Eunhyuk. Soon, Kyuhyun became good friends with them. Donghae insisted on paying for all of Sungmin's medical bills, and at first, Kyuhyun didn’t want Donghae to do that because Sungmin was his boyfriend, but Donghae told him that by paying the bills, he would feel relieved because he helped his brother. Ryeowook and Yesung always came too; they always brought food for Kyuhyun, and they also always stayed until nighttime. They too, became good friends with Donghae and Eunhyuk.
And on the 8th day, Sungmin’s eyes fluttered open.
