Kira watched the door slam shut behind Trent with a defeated feeling. She hadn't meant it, at least not the way it had come out, but he'd been sketching again instead of listening to her sing and she'd thought...well, she'd thought they had grown closer than they apparently were.

Granted, Trent had been hard to get close to; he was shy and had a lot on his mind, a lot of things going on at home. But, she'd thought that maybe--just maybe--he'd actually started to like her too, and that maybe they could have spent her birthday together. Spending time with him was all she really wanted.

It was time to face the facts, even if those facts hurt. He's not my boyfriend.

"Hey, Kira," the drummer asked as she shouldered her way past him toward the back of the stage, "what's wrong?"

"Good show!" a teen who'd been trying to pick up on her for ages called from the floor.

That was the last straw. This had to be the crappiest birthday ever.

The guitar clutched in her fingerless gloved hands became her life line, her anchor. Closing her eyes, she dragged in a deep breath before setting it gently in its case and clamping down the latches. If she hurried, she still had time to change and catch a movie for twilight prices or hit the beach to watch the sun set. At least there had been no monsters, so even if she didn't matter to Trent--or to anyone else--she mattered to Mesagog.

The thought drew a smile and by the time she hit the floor, thoughts of Trent didn't hurt so much. At least it wasn't like the day before. He'd hidden behind his sketch pad the entire time she was performing, had only glanced up a couple of times and smiled at her when she'd met his eyes. She'd tried not to be hurt, had even asked to see the drawing after the show. Another super hero...the only thing he knew how to draw.

He's not my boyfriend, she reminded herself, skirting a table and ducking her head before the boys could catch her eye. She wanted to be alone. They'd know something was wrong and try to cheer her up, but that wasn't her thing. She needed to get over it on her own.

Before she could escape, the door opened. Dr. Oliver blocked her way.

"Hey, Kira." A smile lit his face. "You seen Trent?"

One. Two. Three. Deep breath. "Yeah, you just missed him."

"Okay, thanks." He was halfway back out before he looked back at her with an impish grin. "Happy birthday."

A flush crept into her cheeks. He wasn't supposed to know. Nobody was supposed to know. "How did you..." Her eyes dropped. "Thanks."

"Where do you think you're going?" Ethan demanded, planting himself between her and the door.

"Home, if you'll move your blue..." Her voice dropped. "Dino carcass, out of my way."

"Dino carcass," Conner said from over her shoulder. "I'll have to remember that one." He popped a handful of peanuts in his mouth, crunched in her ear. "Where'd Trent go?"

One. Two. She was tired of counting and the deep breaths didn't help any more. She whirled on Conner, brandishing her guitar case. "How the hell do I know? He's not my boyfriend!"

Behind her, the door opened again.

Conner's eyes rose and widened. A grin spread across his face. "Could have fooled me."

Ethan snickered. Even Hayley, stationed behind the bar, grinned. Kira thought she was going to die. She hadn't wanted anyone know how she felt, especially Conner and Ethan. Now, she'd never hear the end of it. Now...

"Happy birthday?"

She turned to the prettiest package she'd ever seen, all decked out in fancy foil paper with lacy ribbon and an enormous bow on top. But, it wasn't the package so much that held her attention, though she accepted it with trembling hands. It was the smile--the nervous smile--on Trent's face that captured her, made it hard to look away.

"Aren't you going to open it?" Dr. Oliver asked as he popped through the door behind Trent, arms filled with the biggest cake she'd ever seen.

"Go ahead," Trent urged. A blush colored his cheeks. "I hope you like it. I've never...um...done anything like this before."

"Party! Party!" Conner chanted behind her.

Everyone in the Hayley's Cyberspace picked up the cry.

But, Kira ignored them all. Turning away from the boys, she dropped into a chair at the table where she'd deposited her guitar. Trent shadowed her, hovered nervously at her elbow while she tore the pretty paper away. Her fingers plucked at the ribbon, but she was too anxious, too overwhelmed to destroy it the way she had the paper.

"Allow me," the White Ranger said with a smile she felt all the way down in the pit of her stomach.

He sliced at the ribbon and it fell away, taking the remains of the paper with it.

She'd never seen anything as beautiful in her life, and as her fingers traced the graceful images around the edges of the silver picture frame that surrounded it, tears filled Kira's eyes. It was like looking in the mirror, only she swore she'd never looked that good.

The portrait was her, not a super hero this time. It was like Trent had captured her soul. She smiled back at herself, eyes half open, fingers pressed to guitar strings. He'd caught every detail in her clothing, every emotion she'd felt while singing.

"It's...me," she whispered. "I thought..."

Trent's flush deepened. "I was afraid you'd see it before I finished."

"I thought you could only draw super heroes."

"He's been working on that thing for weeks," Ethan said.

"For you," Trent said, ducking his head, "I'd try..." His eyes met hers. His smile turned to a sheepish grin. "Anything."

Every bad thing she'd thought, every jealous moment she'd experienced evaporated in the face of the portrait.

"I love it." Setting the picture aside, she rose to throw her arms around Trent's neck. "Thank you." Their lips met. "Thank you so much."
