Hate you, Mitsubishi!

Miata's been having shifting issues, got worse and worse but I couldn't really do anything about it due to lack o' money. It got to the point where first and reverse were damn impossible to pop into and fifth would grind on entry. Right when I figured the synchros were done and I'd just replace the tranny, the tranny's fifth gear died on the way to ( Read more... )

What year is it? I only had to replace the one on my '90 once.. and it only takes about 1/2 hour at most :) But yea, kinda shitty that IT had to be one of the few parts that trickled down.

97. I loaned it to him back in 04 or 05. X) And yeah, at least it's easy to replace.

Yeah, '97. Sure it's only a half hour, but that's yet another half hour blown on the damn thing that can be spent fixing other bits like the brake caliper that's been messed up as long as I've owned the car.

Yikes, that sucks. I hope the slave cylinder fixes your problem.

I had an 86 Hyundai Excel which was basically a rebadged Mitsubishi. That car turned me off of Mitsubishi vehicles forever.

The slave cylinder is super easy to replace, but yeah, they die about every 70-80k. I replaced that one back in 03, I think.

In Mitsu's defense (talk about words I never thought I'd speak) at least the ignitors they made for the Miata hold up pretty well.

Oh, so it has been replaced before. That actually puts me at about the right mileage then.

...but this is why I'm glad I learned how to clutchless-shift and deal with non-syncro'd gearboxes lately. I don't do it as a standard practice since it eats syncro's for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but it's a good way to test if it's the syncro's dying or just the clutch-hydraulics.

But yeah... Mitsu's can have lovely ride dynamics, and some really impressive engine blocks that make some motorcycle tachs whimper, but the vehicles have so many little fiddly-bit issues it definately gets annoying. DSM alternators being inches from the turbo, nuff said.

That wouldn't have worked in this case at all, actually. The snagging and grinding was the same with or without clutch pedal use, probably from the destroyed plastics in the shifter.
