So, how's your judgement?

I posted about a test I have to take on the day thread. It's called the Situational Judgement Test. Basically you're given a situation and have to select, from 5 choices, the most effective and least effective response to the situation. It seems like a rather odd thing to be testing, since it's so subjective.

Here are a couple of sample questions ( ( Read more... )

Weird. I would think the *least* effective answer to the last one would be #5--offer to help the co-worker with his personal problems. I mean...what the heck right do you have to butt in, and how could you really help, anyway? The guy could be getting a divorce. He could be getting a sex-change operation. You don't know!

The other tough thing is--it doesn't really tell you what the "goal" is. It makes a difference to the answers. 'Most effective' for which goal? Getting the project done? (That's the assumption, but it doesn't say.) Maintaining a good relationship with your co-workers *while* getting the job done? Being understanding, and keeping your co-worker from getting fired, while getting the job done?

It's a dilemma.

That's the problem. It's so vague. I guess putting in overtime yourself is the least effective since you'd end up burning out as well. There are 50 questions like this on the test tomorrow:-(

I think for both questions it's the whole "doing nothing and let the situation go on and deteriorate inexorably" that would be just completely ineffective. I think the point is for the test taker to realize that, when confronted with a problem, the least effective response is to ignore it as if nothing happened; you always have to face the problem because doing nothing is worse than giving it an unfit response. Am I making any sense?
