I thought I knew what was going to kill Kosette. It was going to be kidney failure. After all, she'd had kidney disease for over a year, and her kidneys were going to crash. Or it was going to be that the arthritis in her hind legs would progress to such a point that she'd no longer leave her bed, not even to use the litter box.

Ethel wasn't previously adopted because she wasn't a kitten or an outrageously outgoing adult. In general, those are the cats that get adopted. Ethel is a lap cat, but quiet, and she won't come up to strangers and jump on their laps, especially when other cats are around.

Your extended exposure to Ethel probably helped a lot in her getting used to you and showing her affectionate side underneath the reserve.
