Pocket Guinea Scales, by H. Bell, Prescot, Lancashire, c.1820-40 Dimension close:14*2.2*1.5 cm, open : 27 cm long and 6 cm high Material: Mahogony, brass.
This is a self erecting brass scale known as a Lancashire Gold Balance. During the early part of the 19th century there was increased quality control within
the Royal Mint (which made the coins) to help stop the losses and indeed by 1866 every gold and silver coin was weighed individually prior to being circulated. (wiki)
These pocket scales were made to allow their owner to check their coins. The narrow mahogany box has a hinge at one end and a spring button ( which is a bit tight)
catch at the other end. A paper label of instructions is pasted inside the box. The brass frame has a single bar with a slide for sovereign & half sovereign and a system
of fold over cams in combination to check the other gold coinage.
