Rolling Pin Scale
This English five-pin rolling pin letter scale is highly sought after by collectors. The patent was granted to Robert Willis February 12, 1840. These scales were manufactured
in Birmingham 1840-1865 by Joseph & Edmond Ratcliff. The scale is a half-Roberval weight-lifting design. Set on either a mahogany or marble base three models are known
with three, five or seven rolling pins.

upon a walnut base, 26cm wide, 14.3cm high Professor R. Willis was the professor of Maths at Cambridge University. Patent No.8384, was taken out in 1840.

Engraved on the plate is Waterlow & Sons, Manufacturers, London, the retailer who was a stationary manufacturer.
Inset into its base are eight tapered square knobbed brass weights. The weights are designated with both ounces and pence.
The base made of mahogany measures 10” by 5” and the scale is 5” in height.

Wooden base with five weights.
Height: 6.5cm / 2.56in.
Length: 16cm / 6.3in.
Joseph & Edmund Ratcliff, a set of brass postal scales and weights, c.1850, struck for 'J and E Ratcliff, makers',
upon an oval oak base with four weights, ½oz - 4oz, (three original, two missing), 7.5cm high
Joseph & Edmund Ratcliff, father & son, 59 & 60 St Paul's Square, Birmingham, brass founders & stampers, makers of lamp fittings,
chandeliers & gas fittings (working 1832-death of Joseph 1862). They made many types of small scales.
Beautiful Victorian Postal Scales made by J & E Ratcliff in about the middle of the 19th., Century , 1850/60's or thereby .
They are complete and in very fine condition , the letter plate is inscribed J & E Ratcliff.
Makers and all the weights are in their individual depressions . The weights range is from 4 ounces , 2 ounces , 1 ounce ,
half ounce and 2 quarter ounces.
