This example has a cast iron frame with black finish, with “TORSION BALANCE” in the center of the base. A metal tag on one side of the base is marked:
“THE TORSION BALANCE CO. / STYLE 3500 NEW YORK NO. B 11449 / PAT. JAN. 6. 85. JAN. 22. 89. MAY 19. 91.”
A metal tag on the other side reads “LEVITT-FERGUSON CO. / LABORATORY SUPPLIES / BALTIMORE. MD.”
A sliding weight, on the circular bar below the scale, would be used for taring containers.

This balance has a case of glass and mahogany. The pans are nickel plated brass, and 9 inches diameter.
The beam is steel and 12 inches long. The inscription on the floor of the case reads:
“THE SPRINGER TORSION BALANCE CO. / STYLE 252 NEW YORK NO. 16095 / PAT. JAN. 6, 85, JAN. 22, 89, MAY 19, 91.”
The Springer Torsion Balance Co. began in business, as such, in 1887; mounted an elaborate display
at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893; and boasted that its counter scales were “the standard of perfection.”

This dairy cream testing scale was manufactured in Jersey City, New Jersey, in 1897 by The Torsion Balance Co.
The scale has patent dates of Jan 6, 1885, Jan 22, 1889, and May 19, 1891. The striking hand-applied
finish on the top plate is called “Marble Paint.” Not very many were produced with this type of finish making this scale very rare.
