fwiw, my little 40 gb is a passport; it's nice and convenient though I don't notice there's much difference in whether I use it or not as opposed to the desktop one that takes the separate power source... but I suspect I don't use external hds as often as you do.
go here to buy it, b/c Staples has them on sale for $99 starting sunday 2/15. the 500gb model.
but before you purchase it from there, you should go here to buy a $25 off $75 or more coupon for staples for like $2. drops price down to about $76 and change. really good for a portable. also = great for your WD TV media player!
I have two of these (and that case logic case they recommend with it on amazon) and I love them. Easy to use, no external/separate power source, small, easy to transport = win.
I have two larger drives (one of which is a TB) that require a power cord/brick. They're great for home, but I hate transporting them around. The passport is great for doing that.
Depends on what you need it for. If you'll be out and about, certainly the passport. Make sure your lappy CAN power it, though. I know my PowerBook G4 could not power the passport on its own.
Otherwise why bother? Get the desktop version. I'm betting that would be a more sturdy HD anyway.
