Character information

Character's Name: Canada (Nouvelle-France) (human name: Mathieu Bonnefoy)
Series: Axis Powers Hetalia
Age: physically ~4; actually at least 200 years old
Timeline: 1674.

Canon Resource Link: Canada on the APH Wiki and Nouvelle-France on Wikipedia. However, since neither of these really encompasses what the personal history of the character of Canada is, I'll elaborate below.

As a naming note: officially, on paper, according to France, this little guy's name is New France. However, that English is just hideous, so when he introduces himself, particularly to Europeans, he'll be Nouvell- France. For the ease of narrative (and because that is, at least in rough phonetics, what his people and bear call him) and canon continuity, though, I'll be referring to him as Canada. Hopefully this isn't too terribly confusing.

Once upon a time, a tribe of people found a little spirit boy wandering around, looking lost and spending excessive amounts of time befriending wildlife. Deciding he was special and ought to be shared among the families and nation-like organizations, no one ever thought to keep him safe and in one spot. This didn't mean he wasn't loved, no, just that he spent a lot of time very much alone. One day, though, an European with a soft spot for beaver fur hats met this little spirit boy and took a liking to him.

Unfortunately, the European left almost immediately because this place was too miserable and cold. Little Canada was alone again, but hopeful - oh so very almost pathetically hopeful - that France would return. And France did return, more than once, but it wasn't until many years later that he stopped being a wuss and managed to last a whole winter. This made Canada happier than you can ever imagine, because that meant someone wanted to be his friend, maybe even take care of him. Before too long, France had "adopted" Canada as a son and was slowly teaching him how to be a proper European colony. In Canada's eyes, this was just a lot of letting the European's be rude to your people, but being grateful that they were straightening out things that hadn't needed straightening out for you.

After some time that was equal parts growth and Canada growing increasingly frustrated with things not being peaceful, and a few decades of instances you needn't be bored with because this isn't a history paper, Canada was more or less kidnapped by England for a few years.

However, this British rule over the colony of Acadia, very much so Canada's land, didn't last too long before France decided to be a good father and shooed Angleterre off to dote on his own New World kid as opposed to trying to take other's. After this, things quieted down for the time being, with Canada growing fonder of France's influence and his visits across the ocean to Europe. France, in turn, decided to keep making a bigger deal out of his little one than his few hundred settlers there strictly deserved. Canada, for his part, couldn't say he minded the attention or prestige that came with being a Royal Colony, a true and important part of France's empire family.

I'll be playing Canada from about a decade after this, July, 1674, during a time without any major conflicts or disruptions, just growth and smiles, for the little colony.

Personality: Most notably, Canada is shy. He's prone to hiding behind parental figures or his bear, mumbling and stuttering over introductions when he hasn't practiced them first, and being quiet to the point of forgettable. This is hardly all the colony has to offer, though.

In what little canon we see of him at the approximate timeframe I'll be taking him from, Canada is being led by England to meet with America. Although plainly anxious about how America will accept him, Canada is also terribly excited. The thought of having a brother, of having a family to call his own is a very exciting prospect. Some children with the sort of isolation and odd ups and downs of affection and interest that Canada had would easily have simply gone self-sufficient and cold to affection. Nearly the opposite happened to this little fellow, though. While he is extremely capable of taking care of himself, there are very few things he enjoys more than hugs from his "Papa", France, or spending time with freshly-made friends, hopefully of about his size. Although he may be timid upon first meetings, relying on having his bear with him for comfort and opting to know exactly how the introduction is going to go on his part before it ever begins, he'll never choose to avoid them rather than face the possible rejection of not immediately being liked. This may be part youthful optimism, the hope that more people will like him than won't, but it's how he handles meetings anyway.

After he's grown to trust and like someone, Canada is affectionate and loyal almost to a fault, willing to defend and believe in somebody until they've seriously hurt him. He believes in the good in everybody and that's something that's obvious with his unequivocal trust in nations like France. Track records of past and future might show that France wasn't exactly the best father figure a youngling could ask for, but if Canada had any complaints about the upbringing, they're not easily brought up. History is important, but it's also past and what's important to Canada is what's happening right now. And right now, for him, France is being the greatest parent ever known. When it comes to dealing with humans, Canada is polite but friendly, always assuming that the best will happen if only everyone is nice to each other. This works sometimes, but not always, and when someone breaks his faith in humanity, in the people he gladly accepts and adores as his, it's a tough blow. War is depressing and - the way the Europeans fight, with all their weapons and illnesses - unfair. Canada's reaction to trouble like this is one of two things: either he wanders off to be alone, to surround himself with tears and wildlife and snow until he feels one with the land and can have some guidance in correcting things; or he gets angry. He may be small, but he's abnormally strong, and not afraid of size differences when he gets into his angry moods. Sometimes he'll take it out on objects, but more often than not, a swift kick to the shin or a threatening gesture with a well-used bow and arrow set is the result of getting on his bad side. Deliberately hurting his people in any way isn't something he tolerates lightly. Hurting or scaring him, on the other hand, will usually get tears from Canada and a hard bite for the perpetrator from Kumajirou. The boy and the bear are nearly inseparable, to the point of being apparently co-dependent, and trying to keep one from the other is a great exercise in watching the tiny colony prove just how strong and determined he can be.

Powers: As a nation/colony/spirt-of-the-land/thing, Canada's main differences from a human boy come in his strength, incredibly slow aging, tolerance for cold, quick healing, and a fairly high pain threshold. Aside from that, he's quite normal

As a new power, I'm catering to the fact that his bear companion is going to have his usual power of communicating through human speech taken away and giving Canada the ability to understand him. While everyone else only hears growls, Canada will be able to communicate with him as smoothly as ever.

Appearance: Canada looks like your typical 3-to-4 year old boy. Slightly pudgy in spots, although it's definitely more muscle than proper pudge. He's got light blonde, slightly wavy hair that he keeps cut moderately short, and eyes that fall somewhere around indigo on the colour spectrum.

Suitability/Eligibility: Despite looking very, very young, Canada has been around a considerable amount of time. He's been through a lot and thus is strong emotionally and capable mentally. He's had to deal with great changes in his years and countless struggles between his people, each other, and their environment. He's more or less self-sufficient, used to spending time alone or just with his bear, including spending the majority of rather difficult winters alone or with only minimal dependence on humans. From a physical and psychological perspective, this shows just how strong and independent he is. Although he'll gladly cling to someone's skirt or coat-tails for security, if he's left standing alone against an unknown enemy, he's not the sort to back down. There's a fine line between timid and afraid, but Canada tends to stay far from it, quiet but resolved and fully capable of handling whatever anything throws at him. (Looking ahead a few hundred tumultuous years, it's obvious that the boy can withstand a lot, just as a canon/world history spoiler side note. When things get bad, Canada just comes out stronger.) Carriero should be no exception.

The three magic words are: 1: youth, 2: fountain, 3: eternal

Third-Person Sample: He had spent a lot of time waiting. Waiting and wandering seemed to be his specialties, if anyone were to pay too-close attention to it, not that anyone ever would. But today, he was waiting, sitting on a rock looking over the water, a white bear nearly the same size as he was, curled up at his feet. With his elbows on his knees, he was leaning forward to rest his chin in hands to better watch. And to wait.

Since the first time he met France, Canada had been enthralled by the European Empire. He was charismatic and wore nice hats and had evidently done something right to grow up to be big and strong like he was. Sure, his people were sometimes difficult to like, but they tried harder than some of the other Europeans did to get along with Canada's people, so he had to give them consideration for that, and, besides, that had no bearing on Canada's favourite thing about France. That favourite thing was, of course, that France wanted him. After more years than he could keep track of of wandering his wilderness and hoping more than he should for someone who wanted to keep him, Canada had finally found someone interested in just that.

It hadn't been without difficulties, of course. European diseases were just as hard on the Canadians as Canada's winters were on them. The first time France tried to declare Canada a colony, he couldn't last the winter. Not the second or third tries, either. There was a lot of waiting then, too, long days staring out at the ocean and waiting for those boats to show up again, to bring his Papa back. Canada could remember waking up on the shore just after sunset, Kumajirou nudging him to wake up and sleep somewhere safe. It was another day, another month, another season that France wouldn't be coming back for him.

This wasn't a wait of years, though, just of months in between visits. And his ship was supposed to be back in the New World today. Canada was taking his word on that as a promise. So Canada was waiting.

He was almost sick of waiting when he spotted a ship coming into view. Sitting up straighter, he watched it attentively until it pulled into the harbour, until those markings and flags couldn't be anything but French.

Canada took off at a run, deerskin moccasins quiet against the foliage of the waterfront as he moved as fast as he could to the docks. Kumajirou was right behind him, faithful to keeping care of the young thing, even when it was running like mad to see someone equally destructive and helpful, and scaring nearby rabbits in the process. Canada was saying apologies as he went, but didn't stop to chat, too intent on getting to the ship, too intent on getting that hug he knew France would have ready for him.

Being small, it was easy enough to get through people, to stand on tiptoe on the dock edge until he spotted the Empire he was looking for, the darting over to grab on to his coat-tails to be sure he had his attention.

"Papa! Bonjour, Papa!"

Upon noticing the royal colony, France immediately scooped him up, talking and cooing away. Canada wasn't really listening, though, just cuddling into his father's shoulder with a bright, happy smile. His hugs were always worth the wait.

First-Person Sample: ((video))
Hello, I am Nouvelle-France and it would be very nice if someone could help me-No, that's not right. Hello, I'm Canada and-That's not it, either...

[There's a colony muttering under his breath, trying to get things figured out so he can get to getting something done. At some point, he's been shown how to magically address other people who are lost like him, but it didn't occur to him to practice what he was going to say before turning the video recording function on his portable computer on. So this is rehearsal time.

Canada continues to mumble and stumble his way through introductions and requests for help, working through various phrasings and tones before finally clearing his throat and addressing the network.]

Hello, I'm Nouvelle-France and since I am lost here, it would be very, very nice if someone were to be friendly and answer some questions for me. Where is everyone who is here from and does anybody know how to get home? Those are important ones. Also, can we write letters to send home?

Oh! And where can I get fish to feed my bear? Thank you. [Priorities: Canada has them.]

Anything else? As Canada has a rather strong dependency on his polar bear companion, Kumajirou, I would like to request he's able to bring him along. Kuma is the size of a typical young bear (and a typical young boy, actually), more or less immortal, capable of talking (although he'll be stripped of this ability in the asylum), and prone to biting people, particularly Europeans, for antagonizing Canada. Basically, he's a fluffy, adorable, questionably useful, guard bear.
