Alive, if Unwell

I'm home from my vacation and will be posting again soon. My thoughts on the Atheist Alliance International conference in Iceland will appear on the Brights forums shortly (hopefully), and then I'll get to work on summarising my America Experience (which will be friends-locked). At the moment, I'm mostly trying not to cough my lungs up.

Meanwhile ( Read more... )

Where on earth did you come across that weird comic? Kind of addictive though, and he's right about the hypocrisy of being offended by a comic strip but not by the trivialisation.

Err... Which of them? There are six comics on that page. I think I found a link on another webcomic.

Not really sure what you're talking about, the hypocrisy is that they're perfectly alright with jokes about AIDS and infanticide, but not about 9-11. They're reading a very offensive comic strip and then they complain about it being offensive about something that THEY care about. Personally I think if you don't like that sort of offensiveness you shouldn't be on his page from the start.

I'm referring to the bit where he asks why people are offended by a comic, but not by the government approved trivialisation of it all that seems to be happening. Such things as spending millions of taxpayers dollars to build a monument that doesn't benefit anyone actually involved, but males politicians look good. I agree too about the attitudes to AIDS etc. as well.

Actually I didn't really understand a good part of the ones I read (all of Nana and Penny Tribute) - seems I'd need to have read a lot of the anime it's based on. But I didn't find it offensive - rather tasteless and not very funny, but not offensive.

"Just like people care more for the tsunami and Katrina victims than the people who die daily from starvation and AIDS, they are more likely to be offended if you joke about 9-11 than infanticide or the holocaust"
That's true. On the other hand, I think some jokes just lack taste and shouldn't be made. Which in no way means we should ban anything or over react like that.

Also, I hope you get better =)

Some jokes lack taste sure, but it's not like anyone's forcing us to read his comics. I don't like it when people make tasteless jokes in for instance a chat, or other direct conversation, when it's difficult for me to avoid taking part of it. But on a personal webpage people can be as tasteless as they want, I can simply choose not to view it. The people who complained that his 9-11 joke was offensive were apparently ok with the other, in my personal opinion MUCH more tasteless jokes about infanticide, etc.

I think I expressed myself in a wrong manner, because your answer seems to tell something different to what I said and it's exactly my thoughts =)
For the record, I haven't seen the webpage. I don't have much time right now, leaving tomorrow and all that =P

Oi! You still alive? Not like you to not post for a month, though it's taken me most of that month to get the internet at my new place and discover that you hadn't posted.

Ah well, hopefully you've not posted because you've been far too busy enjoying yourself. Take care.
