Wow - it looks like you had a very busy but very exciting time last year. Loved the pictures, I could almost smell the air and feel the sunshine/rain on my skin. I especially liked the flower pics and the occasional animal pics. Btw animals - on the bunny island I would love to know the story of that abandoned building. A zombie apocalypt movie could be filmed there. Maybe the bunnies are zombie bunnies... :P XD
So you plan to visit a different area of the country whenever you go there? But with your (at least) 1 year - you have plenty of time to explore the more hidden, less exposed parts of Japan. *.*
The Bunny Island actually has a pretty sinister history -- it housed a poison gas factory during World War II; the ruined building is a power station that supplied the factory. We also stumbled on some remains of a fort that was built during the Russo-Japanese war. But if the bunnies are zombie bunnies, I'm glad none of them bit me! xD
Yeah, I like to visit places I haven't been to before, for sure -- they don't necessarily have to be off the beaten path though; there are plenty of touristy places that I just haven't had a chance to reach yet. Once I have my placement my plan is to take daytrips on weekends until I've exhausted the local and nearby points of interest, and then start going further afield for 2-day trips when possible. It's difficult to make any concrete plans without knowing where I'll be and whether or not there will be a major transit hub nearby. I'll take it one destination at a time.
Woah the Fukuoka canal looks pretty sweet, I can't wait to check it out and ooh I didn't really think about doing day trips!! So many ideas, yay, I should do research for my trip soon. Your photos look so well composed and the architecture is really interesting too. I shall swing by to check out the rest when it isn't 2am, oops. ~_~
Fukuoka was BEAUTIFUL my only regret was that I was sooo tired at the end of every daytrip that I never quite got it together to go out to eat proper street food since the yatai didn't get set up until later in the evening. Canal City was lovely.
