Weekend Trip, and first experience sliding along the pavement

Apr 26, 2009 17:50

Well this weekend went out withpanth to get myself some riding experience on something that a) isn't an interstate, and b) isn't small straight sections of urban San Diego littered with stopsigns and lights.

As an aside, only got the bike in January.  Probably put on 700mi  (all of which is urban San Diego, or Urban Orange County).

The route:

Went from Agora Hills (A), to Rockstore on Mulholland (B), then to end of the road, loop back down to Encinal Canyon Road, and then took the 23 North.  Though, at (D), is where I took the fall.

Not entirely sure how the fall went down or what caused it.  But it was a many features of going into the second hairpin without seeing Panth's line, as I lost sight of him after first hair pin; improper speed for the turn (I think too slow); starting the turn too late; and going to wide (the last thought on my mind before scrape-scrape-scrape-POOF was I need to tighten up the turn in order to not go into the guard rail; and I think I just could'nt compensate adequately [due to inexperience])

But, this trip more than doubled my mileage experience on the bike, so, that's a plus.   Ending with a fall, a bit of a minus.

Slid on the ground and wedged the bike underneath the guard rail.   Shifter peg did it's job and broke off, and I led the way at a very slow pace (that I was comfortable with) back up the length of the 23.

Improvised a new shifter, and cleaned out a large amount of sand and gravel.  And then took 'er the 160 mi back home.

Main area of damage -- entirely caused by guard rail.

Damage from sliding on the road: minimal:

But being still a n00b to motorcycling in general, not entirely sure
one) what all i need to repair, look for, or to clean out (the bike was buried under sand and gravel) for one. [Overall it feels fine? I am not a good judge of what feels fine as I have only been riding for a week before this; and for a month when I first got the bike in January (hand a hand injury that necessitated a 5wk gap in riding).  So, everything is in the "I don't recall if it's supposed to sound/feel different.

Only riding things I noticed on the way back was that it doesn't want to shift nicely.  At a stop, it doesn't want to shift out of neutral.  Cannot downshift two gears at once (ie: clutch, click down, press-down (and doesn't actually shift down a second time).  So, I have to reengage the engine before I can shift again.   Signal switch doesn't work (this is probably just sand all in the innards, as that entire control was buried within the soft sand/gravel), and something just felt off at speed (50+) but that could just be the fact that the headlight assembly was bouncing around.

And two: where to look to get everything I need
