Advice on chain maintenance needed

I'm taking another step into being a garage mechanic, and today's topic is chain care.  This is all new to me, and I am stuck with whether or not it is time to replace the chain ( Read more... )

It is a "a O-Ring" or "x-Ring" chain?

O-ring type.

And I stand corrected. The chain has 15K miles on it.

That's what I'm thinking. I had 'replaced' instead of 'adjusted' in my maintenance log, so I thought it was younger than it is.

I've never had the swing arm axle bolt out that far. You may want to consider getting a chain with one or two fewer links, or remove one or two links on your own.

Since I discovered I was mistaken about the chain's age (15k miles), I've gone ahead and ordered a new chain kit. I had considered removing a link to shorten it, but with this many miles on it I think replacing it is best. Plus, it's a bit more of a learning experience. :)

At 15k and nearing the end of adjuster travel, that chain is due for replacement.
