Wizard 101: Part 2 Your first day of school!

May 03, 2013 01:31

For the most part, I'm not going to run a 30 day thing, here because I've honestly been playing this game on and off since launch and I really don't fully know what would be newbie relevant, but I'll post a few days to give you an idea of how things work with my newbie fire wizard.

I couldn't figure out how to get new spells into my deck, just the sidebar (where I have to go through and do deck management in the middle of a fight). Of course, it didn't help that I blew my "thanks for joining" 1000 gold on on-shot spells it turns out I can almost never fire off at this point due to low pip-ness. The tutorial doesn't really do a good job of explaining how ACTUAL combat and deck building work.

Ughs! I was lucky I didn't make an attempt at deck building till I started scooping up gold (treasure) cards, so I didn't spot that right away. I stumbled on it by accident, I think, when I opened my inventory.

Did you finally find your deck management section? It's easy to spot when you open your inventory. Or hit 'P'. I found this players guide helpful. (And I should link it to my FAQ's)

I'm usually on in the early evenings around 5PM Mountain Time. If you want a little in-game help. Look around for Thomas Dreamcatcher, Justin Dragonfriend or Finnigan Willowleaf. Those are my mains.

Yeah, I found it last night. But when I clicked on my gold cards, it put them in my sidebar, not in my main deck.

My character is Timothy Boomstaff, BTW. Was trying for a last name like Bose, or failing that Ash Boomstick, but....

BTW, the game not only doesn't have globals in the sense I meant in the template, it's almost anti-globals. You can't find anyone via the game, and friend codes have to be exchanged outside the game...they're not real words, so they are disallowed by the chat filter's anti-predator elements. There doesn't really seem to be a way to find people at all, other than shout in broadcast and hope they're in the same zone.

Yeah I realized that last night when I used the friend-finder code with you. I was under the impression it was a 'universal' code. I need to also change that.
The point of the code is to contact people you know you can trust out of game. :( It's silly. I DO wish they'd let us type actual names into the 'add friend' thing versus roaming around looking for them.

I get that they want to protect children with these family games but sometimes they are over-paranoid to the point of inconvenience.

You're such a peach, hon! The secondary spells I'm not sure how much you can mix and match but it's stuff you roll into your deck so if you have the pips to cast them. Then you can.

I usually stick with one primary, one secondary. But evidently you can do more! :D

There's a pretty good guide here, https://www.wizard101.com/w101playersguide
as well as the in-game help menu under the ? to tell you what the different symbols mean on the cards. Those have both been infinitely helpful for me. It's actually a pretty complex game for a kid's game!

Hopefully we can get the friend codes working and you can putter around with us!

Fingers crossed. Looks like there may be a Realm problem though. Possibly because I'm in the UK.... oooh I wonder, I'll log out and back in again. If It fails then I'll make sure to go back to the Ambrose realm.

Welp, I seem to have run out of quests that don't require going into locked zones. Wasn't quite L10 at the time, so I did a little Kraken-grinding to make it the rest of the way, in the hopes that some quests would unlock at L10. But it doesn't look like they do. And, frankly, I didn't find the game interesting enough to plop down the money to keep going, at least not in my current financial situation.

I'll leave the game installed for now, it's not like it takes a lot of memory, and if I can get a decent job I might be willing to throw some money at them for a one month sub to look into the other parts of the world.

Ughs! EVERYTHING is locked? Yuck. It really is an extended trial to a level cap, isn't it. :( That's a shame.

I keep wondering if the zone unlocks are permanent for W101 like Pirate 101 evidently is.

Some are obviously locked, like "Go to Firecat Alley and do this," while others are stealth-locked, like the crafting intro mission that requires ingredients found in locked neighborhoods. Most annoying was the mission that had its door in Triton Avenue...but actually took place in Cyclops, a locked zone.
