Summary: Kouichi has one.

Love was a fickle thing.

There were millions of people whom it mindlessly affected and laid its circumstances on in different, frustrating ways. Miharu and Yoite, for example, had a very difficult situation. ‘Situation’ was the better word than relationship or friendship in their case, as neither definition really fit the pair properly. Yoite was too detached to even begin to know what to do when presented with the intimacy he always sought, and Kouichi knew Miharu had grown so attached to the boy he would do unspeakable things for his sake. Things like ally with the Kairoshuu or press those paper-thin little kisses to his mouth when Miharu wasn’t aware that someone was watching. Kouichi had a keen eye and always saw these things. It had a lot to do with being an owl in his spare time.

Now, Kouichi and Raimei were a different (but not entirely opposite) kind of situation-relation. He wasn’t sure what to call it when the concern-softened glares she sent him made his insides buzz. It felt like she’d plugged him into a socket and left him all full of electric charge, weak and trembling and just a tiny bit hooked. He just knew the feeling was candy-sweet, and as someone who had never been too fond of sugar, Kouichi could honestly say he never wanted it to go away. Was it love? Probably not, and he doubted it because she still fueled her passion with bloodshed alone and he still found it in him to tack ‘-san’ onto the end of her name every time he said it. A part of him figured it might lessen the anger she turned on him when he said something Altogether Too Stupid, but it never did and most likely never would. The other part said he just liked her name too much and needed to keep up appearances somehow.

But even though Raimei was one for shouting and staring, she held his hands sometimes, linking his white fingers between her pink in a stepladder leading to... well, ultimately, nowhere. It certainly wasn’t going towards love, Kouichi thought. Maybe not even the puppy-like infatuation crush he cradled with as much delicacy as Miharu hung onto Yoite’s arm. But, god, she held his hands, and out of all the things he could have noticed, it was that her fingers were more breakable looking than his.

This is an old one.
