IC:

Character name: Dark Link (Nil)
Fandom: The Legend of Zelda
Timeline: The Twilight Princess Arc (which apparently happens a few decades after Ocarina of Time?)
Age: 19

~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths: He can use a dark version of the Master Sword, Mirror/Hylian shield, and a myriad of other weapons in his arsenal (bombs, bow and arrow, boomerang, etc.) as well as basic shadow powers (like the ability to teleport through shadows and pull weapons out of the ‘inventory’). Unlike Link, though, extra items like the hookshot, and iron boots are unavailable to Dark and so he makes numerous attempts to steal them away from the original hero. He also plays the violin with proficiency.

Dark Link draws power from all the negative emotions of those around him and so he spends a large portion of his time causing mischief.

How would they use their abilities? Dark Link would use his abilities specifically to make Link’s life miserable. His aspirations to take over all of the Kingdom of Hyrule were, unfortunately, dashed when his world was destroyed, but his dreams have not completely flickered out and now he works to help fund the revival of his soon-to-be dark kingdom. Dark Link will make money by becoming a mercenary and selling his sword to whoever might need it. He’s also decently good at make-shifting, reconnaissance, and has excellent survival skills. Since he has no need for food, he never developed any cooking skills, but he’d be more than happy to play the violin at a fancy dinner for some cash~!

Appearance: Dark Link has silver hair that’s parted to the side and sweeps across his forehead to the right. He has prominent sideburns and pointed ears that resemble those of an elf (but if someone calls him an elf, he will get angry). His eyes are a ruby red and dazzle with mischief and his skin is of a caramel tan color. He wears a black tunic over a chainmail suit, grey pants, black boots, black gloves, and a strangely shaped black hat. He carries his scabbard and shield on his back. He is left handed.

Background/Personality: (Since Dark Link doesn’t have much personal history save that in the LoZ manga, I’ve pretty much fabricated most of his background).

Dark Link came into the world the way he appears, a nineteen year old man. He was Ganondorf’s creation and, having no previous life experiences, knew no better than to follow and obey the first person that promised him a future. During his ‘childhood’ or mental development, Dark Link suffered ‘nightmares’, visions of his own death at the hands of a green clad soldier. These, though, were not premonitions, but the memories of his past reincarnations. Dark Link never understood what his dreams meant or what his purpose was and even though he pursued the Dark Lord for answers, he never received a conclusive one.

The lack of self-knowledge forced Dark Link to depend on Ganondorf who sent him away to interfere with Link’s ultimate mission to save Hyrule; Dark Link’s sole purpose seemed to be to stalk the Hero of Time and eradicate him. The shadow being never once questioned his objective; he had no choice but to trust Ganondorf in order to learn about himself.

But Dark Link developed his wits quickly as he pieced together fragments of logic and he came to understand that he was the manifestation of the impurities in Link’s heart, impurities that the Dark Lord managed to harvest, mold, and ultimately give life. He was just a puppet whose ‘soul’ was simply the collection of past memories, an unfortunate victim of servitude under a most dangerous and manipulative Master. Dark Link knew that Ganondorf, at any sway of whim, could end his life in an instant. Such an oppressed life caused him to think about other prospects.

The shadow found himself hiding in the Dark Realm and skulking around the Light World and as he compared what he had and what could be his, he grew more bitter, more hateful, and more vengeful. Dark Link began to loathe his virtuous counterpart because he never understood why Link was given the right to live as ‘Link’ and he the misfortune to live as a hero’s shadow, carrying the memories of those before him. Deep set feelings of longing and jealousy settled in his heart while he waited for the day he could kill Link, avenge his reincarnations, take Link’s position in the Light Realm, and, finally, claim his freedom. His extensive goals weigh heavily on his heart.

In a sense, Dark Link suffers from an extreme case of self-denial, unable to completely confront the fact that he is simply a dark copy of his mold and actively pursuing to take Link’s place in Light Realm society. He gave himself the name ‘Nil’ because he wanted to be recognized as his own person, separate from Link and unrelated to his title ‘Shadow’, but his chosen name only stresses how truly dependent on Link’s identity he is. Despite his personality disorder, Nil has successfully gained a few points of individuality.

Nil is quite an aesthetic in most all aspects. He likes to pass his free hours with music and pursued his passion to become an apt violinist. Though he likes to sing to accompany his playing, he acknowledges that his voice is not strong. He adores nature and anticipates errands into the Light Realm because he wants to embrace its richness which is absent in the Shadow Realm. At night, he can spend hours on the rooftops or open ranges simply scanning the sky’s constellations and the moon’s curves. The beauty of Link’s realm, though, only fueled Nil’s jealousy and makes him even more fervently hateful.

Currently, Nil likes to believe that Ganondorf is dead due to the destruction of Hyrule though this is may be untrue (in case another Mun takes Ganondorf in the future). Though Nil trusts that the Dark Lord is dead, he is not entirely certain and, though he has ultimate freedom for the time being, he unconsciously seeks to know the truth about Ganondorf’s whereabouts. In the meantime, Nil does whatever he pleases (which mainly constitutes harassing Link, skirt-chasing, and making other people’s lives miserable). If ever Lord Ganondorf appears, Dark Link will once more be bound in servitude and must fulfill all tasks laid out to him by the Dark Lord, but, having tasted freedom, he will not be taken once again without some fight.

[Nil’s Voice Journal]

[There’s loud, mechanical clicks as Nil fumbles with the recorder. A beep. There’s a deep, unsettled sigh.]

February 21

I’ve been having these dreams-dreams about him. He keeps coming back, his eyes watch me while I’m sleeping, but I can’t do anything and I just keep sleeping. It’s like I can feel him, like he’s in my room watching everything. I’m not sure what to do anymore. I’m certain he’s dead. Certain! There’s no possible way he could have survived that attack on Hyrule. I don’t even know how I made it out, but…I can’t deny that I’m only Link’s shadow. I’d be able to survive anywhere. But…if I’m the Dark Lord’s servant and the Dark Lord, the one who gave me life, is dead…how is it that I’m still alive? No. I mustn’t think of these things. I have life now. I’m my own person. Hahah, and today is my first birthday…ah, it feels so good to celebrate myself. Eh…I think I’m just worrying myself, over thinking simple things. Ganondorf is dead. It must be that I’ve not acclimated myself to this new…way of life. I’m not used to the things around me. This ‘ship’, as they call it, is no ship I’ve ever seen. It’s too large and made of some peculiar metal, it would never hold itself up on the ocean. And this system of dates…I don’t understand. The years are so strange, nothing like the Hylian calendar. It must be this ‘culture shock’ I’ve heard people talk so much about here, but even then I’m not entirely certain. Perhaps I should skulk around and see what others have to say.

3rd person sample:

He looked at himself. The crimson eyes were seeped in anger and loathing. He looked at himself more. His attire, his hair, his hands, smile, face-everything was that of that idiot Link. Muscles in his hands contracted as his hand curled into a vengeful fist that struck the mirror with all the force he could muster.

“Dammit!” he cried into a shattered reflection. “Why can’t I be like you? You were so lucky to have been blessed with life, but what have I? Nothing! I’m here only to follow you, because I’m nothing more than a villain’s puppet! And yet, by some strange twist of fate, it could have been you in my position. You! If only the goddesses had taken a liking to me, but no…I must have been predestined to be this way. I have no other choice but to…but to…”

His words slipped past gritted teeth and then ceased to come at all.

Ow. Something was hurting. Pain, so familiar. Link had beaten him many times before. This pain was nothing compared to the hurt Nil felt when his pride, his soul was ripped apart by the hands of his legitimate other. Oh, his fist was bleeding. Nil withdrew his limb and cradled it in his unharmed palm then looked at the mirror he had recklessly defiled.

A grunt of disgust and he backed away, staring at himself. Everything was the same. Everything. He was only a reflection. A reflection of Link caught in dim light. He was a shadow, meant to skulk in the darkness, to mimic the motions of his ‘master’, and then to be forgotten. His eyes narrowed.

No. Not anymore.

And he stormed out with a trail of speckling blood in his wake.

Questions? When you say two posts a month, do you mean two ‘logs’ (in both the character journal and actual log sense of the word) or do two threaded comments count? (Yes, I know this was mentioned in the posting requirements section, but I was just wanting clarification.)

Did you put your characters name and fandom in the subject: Yes, ma’am!
