Shit hits fan

Someone very close to me got busted today in his dorm room with alcohol, drugs, drug paraphanalia, weapons (not his), and a host of other rule violations and such. I feel a bit of guilt about this because (while not giving my consent) I never yelled at him for being such a dumb fuck and kept a pretty light hearted attitude about it. Unless he is completely mentally retarded, he knew the risks, and chose to accept them. It's not your fault he was engaging in illegal activities. Sure, you could have told him he should get rid of his stuff, but then what? Do you think he actually would have done so?

I've got a few friends who did (and some still do) use drugs. I told them once that they were asking for trouble, and they just laughed it off. That was the only time I ever mentioned it. And if any of them got caught, oh well, tough shit. Sure it sucks, and sure I hate to see one of my friends in trouble with the law, but I'm not their mother, and I'm not going to make their decisions for them. Though I'll help them out as much as I can as long as it doesn't put me into a compromising position.

Be there for your friend, help out, but don't feel guilty about it.
