Since I have been writing more in my paper journal, I've been feeling like coming back to LJ. I miss having a regular outlet for more sustained interaction than is made possible by platforms like Facebook and Twitter

dine posts a load of hockey related stuff, linking to both articles and fic. While I'm not actually sure about her main team, she links to so much stuff I'm sure you'll find something of interest.
I actually made a conscious decision to favor Boston, since that's where I'm from, but the Capitals were the first team to catch my eye. I used to see them on the tvs on the elliptical machines at my gym, totally by accident, and they were what got me interested in hockey again. The Caps seemed so earnestly working it on the ice! I was impressed. So they still have a special place in my heart, although I do not actually have any Capitals icons, sadly. So you get Bruins. :)
I just do not get the appeal of hockey over bandom. WTF hockey? You are stealing all my friends away from me! That said, jedusaur is a Toews person, and has stuff on AO3 you will probably like.
I'm as surprised as anyone, believe me. But I'm never out of bandom; that's now become part of my day to day life, in a way. I have tickets to see FOB when they come back to New York in September and am looking at going to Riot Fest in Chicago.
I've never been much of a sports person at all, actually. Hockey's appeal for me is that the players have a lot of power dynamics as teams; they need to function as a family of sorts, as units, and also I enjoy the sheer physicality of the sport, the sanctioned contact and unsanctioned, the way it is actually part of the game and the flow when the usual checking and pushing escalates into fights (and how some are in retaliation for mistreatment of a less physical player; some are started to inspire the team; some really are just aggression and adrenaline...)
I've never been a sports person either. I get mildly enthused when the local basketball team gets up to the playoffs, but other than that, meh. Power dynamics, though, I could get into that. ;) My only thing is that I go for the young skinny boys with issues. And who can act gay in public, if not actually be gay.
Riot Fest! I am jealous! I'd consider it if I weren't going to a family reunion a couple weeks before. At least there I'll hopefully get to see Foxy Shazam.
My next concert is fun., I think. I have my shows on my calendar, because I can't remember all the stuff I have going on. :) Foxy Shazam (possibly) at the end of August, Matisyahu (not bandom, but awesome) in mid-Sept, and FOB/Panic at the end of Sept. Yay! And there are local bands interspersed there too, depending on how much energy I have to go see them. :) <3
Hockey? Have we found an intersecting fandom again?
Btw, have you checked out ontd_pucking? Not explicitly an RPF place, but I do see it subtly leaking around the edges in people's comments, especially off-season. And it's a great place to keep up on, you know, the actual hockey news and interviews with players and such.
Thanks for the link! Since the skating version of ONTD is what really helped suck me in to that fandom, I'm sure I'll love the hockey version!
It looks like we might be rooting for different teams in the Cup, though. ;) But I am still exploring all teams. This is all very new.
I have started exploring different journals and primers. I fell in love with the Balckhawks because, basically, Jonathan Toews is my spirit animal, and Patrick Kane is a ridiculous human being, and I love watching them play hockey.
Toews is someone that I am finding easy to read as both a top and bottom, and this is a shift for me...seeing more fluid roles among characters and not immediately latching on to one Dom/sub sort of dynamic (though of course I go straight to the BDSM and loving power exchange).
Here are two fics that really got me started. (actually, theletterelle, I'd recommend these to you, too, if you're willing to dip a toe into hockey...) Excuse the raw links
( ... )
Thanks so much for the links! I have to admit, I'm a lurker there, because those folks really do seem to know the players and and the ins and outs of the hockey politics so well, I feel like I have nothing to add. But it's a great place to lurk and they are pretty comprehensive in their scouring the web for news and footage with these guys off the ice.
If it's easy, by the way, could you also link me to any primers you've found? I've been very slowly dipping my toe into the hockey fandom, and I think primers would help get me more knowledgeable.

Because LJ is very quiet and I'd like to see more folks talking.

my actual team is the Capitals, but I'm a huge fan of the Pens & the Hawks as well as being v.v. fond of assorted players on other teams.
welcome to the madness fun that is hockey!
