I read your website, but I'm unclear on the details - is there any chance you might get the reaction wheel that has seized up working again? Or are you stuck unicycling around up there for the rest of your mission?

The wheel that froze on Dec 27th was manufactured by the same company that made the other two wheels which have been frozen since December of 2001. While it's possible for any one of them to start moving again, it's not something I'd bank on.

Well shoot. Here's hoping that something makes it unstick, and in the mean time, I hope you enjoy your vacation and the chance to talk to 10...

I'm glad you're feeling a little better - and especially glad you're getting some Quality Electron Time with your sweetie. You poor dear.

Thank you. I find that reassuring her helps me. When I have to explain the situation to her, and allay her fears, it places things into perspective for me.

I'm glad to hear that your ground crew found a way to keep you safe and stable while they continue to work on fixing the problem. And I'm sure Mir would have told you to keep your spirits up - possibly even made a joke about it, like {Russian accent ON} "You are having vacation now! Good! Is not good for spacecraft to just work, work, work, with no time off! Say hello to your girlfriend from me!" {Russian accent OFF}

So take advantage of your downtime while you can - pretty soon you'll be back at work, wishing you could spend more time with your sweetie ;-)

You're right. That's pretty much exactly what he'd have said.

You know, it's eerie, but I swear I can hear his voice in my mind, even though I'm just a ground-pounding meat person. I hear a musical baritone, heavily accented but with an excellent command of English; he sounds very wise, but friendly and outgoing, and with a very Russian sense of humor. There's more to a person than just hardware (or meatware)...
