Background: Before I begin, I want to clarify one thing. In DBZ canon, there are two versions of Trunks. There's the version from the main timeline, and then there's one from an alternate timeline, which is the first version we're introduced to. I am going with the latter version of Trunks.

Trunks was born out of wedlock. His mother was Bulma, the heiress of the megacorporation known as Capsule Corp., and his father was Vegeta, the prince of a near-extinct alien race known as Saiyans.

When Trunks was only six months old, tragedy struck. Bulma's close friend, a Saiyan named Goku, and a hero who saved the Earth on multiple occasions, died as a result of a virus. Unfortunately, the worst was yet to come.

Six months after Goku's death, on a spring morning, two beings appeared on an island nine miles southwest of South City. They were androids, known only as 17 and 18, the creations of a mad scientist named Dr. Gero. Dr. Gero was the brains behind the weaponry of the Red Ribbon Army, a criminal organization that Goku had singlehandedly destroyed when he was still a boy. Dr. Gero had escaped with his life and dreamed of revenge ever since, and created 17 and 18 for this purpose. However, the androids rebelled, killing the scientist, and went on a destructive rampage.

However, standing in the androids' way were the Z Fighters, including Trunks's father, Vegeta. Unfortunately, even the best warriors Earth had to offer stood no chance against the androids, and they were wiped out. To make matters worse, one of the fighters was Piccolo, a Namekian who had a bond, both physical and spiritual, with Kami, the guardian of the Earth and the creator of the Dragon Balls, seven mystical orbs that would grant any wish when gathered. When Piccolo died, so did Kami, and the Dragon Balls ceased to exist without their creator, which meant that all unnatural deaths were now permanent deals.

Fortunately, one Z Fighter survived the confrontation. This fighter was Gohan, Goku's son, who presumably survived due to his dormant hidden powers awakening and making him a Super Saiyan. However, Gohan alone was not strong enough to destroy the androids, and they began to do as they pleased whenever they saw fit. As Trunks grew older, Gohan took the boy under his wing and trained him in the art of combat.

When Trunks was about 14, he hit a road block. To progress, he needed to become a Super Saiyan, but he was unable to find the right catalyst. This would not be permanent, though. One day, when the androids attacked, Gohan knocked Trunks out to protect him and went off to face the androids alone. When Trunks came to, he surveyed the battle site. All he found was destruction and, lying in a puddle of rainwater, his mentor's lifeless body. The grief and rage that resulted pushed him over the edge. He was now a Super Saiyan.

Over the next three years, Trunks took on the burden of fighting the androids himself. He never succeeded in destroying them, but they never succeeded in killing him, either. After one particularly close shave, he agreed to help his mother with a plan she had devised.

With some help from Trunks, Bulma had successfully built a working time machine. She had also procured a medicine that would cure the heart disease that had killed Goku. Bulma's plan was to send her son 20 years into the past, where he would find Goku alive and well, and warn him of the impending danger and give him the medicine that would save his life. Trunks went into the past and did as planned.

Three years later in the main timeline, Trunks returned, only to find that everything was out of whack. Instead of 17 and 18, two new androids--one of which was Dr. Gero himself--had appeared, and Goku had contracted the virus a full six months later than he was supposed to. Androids 17 and 18 would eventually appear, and release a third android--16--and the Z Fighters entered into a brief fight against the androids, which would confuse Trunks even further.

The combined might of Vegeta, Trunks, Piccolo, and Tien was not even close to enough to match that of 17 and 18. Not only were they stronger in this timeline, but they were also less bloodthirsty--they let them all survive. The only person they were interested in killing was Goku. In response, Trunks and the others traveled to Goku's house to transport him to Master Roshi's house in order to buy him some time.

Along the way, though, they got a call from Bulma, who had informed them that someone had found Trunks's time machine in a forest, and it was in bad shape. Trunks, however, had his time machine in a capsule in his pocket. Curious, Trunks went with Gohan and Bulma to investigate, and found that the time machine was not only the same as Trunks's, but that it had come from three years after Trunks's own time and arrived four years ago. The only clues as to what came from the future were two halves of a mysterious eggshell and the shed skin of some large, insect-like creature.

In due time, however, the mysteries surrounding this creature lifted. A being named Cell--the ultimate creation of Dr. Gero--had come back from the past. His design required him to absorb Androids 17 and 18 to become complete, but not before attempting to absorb every human who crossed his path. However, around this time, things took a turn for the better. Goku was fully healed.

Goku's next action would be to take Gohan, Trunks, and Vegeta to Kami's Lookout. There, they would train in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, a room in which a person could get a year's training in a single day. Trunks and Vegeta went in first, and when they emerged a day later, learned that Cell had absorbed Android 17 and was in the process of hunting 18. The two Saiyans left to do battle with Cell, and Vegeta alone began to completely overwhelm Cell. Desperate, Cell appealed to Vegeta's competitive nature to let him absorb 18 for a more interesting fight. Vegeta consented, and despite the best efforts of Trunks, Krillin, and 16 to stop him, Cell absorbed 18 and became complete. With his newfound power, Cell easily defeated Vegeta, and proved to be too much for Trunks to handle due to Trunks's idea of powering up being an increase in muscle mass, not realizing he was losing speed. Trunks surrendered but remained defiant, believing that Goku would take out Cell. Intrigued, Cell told Trunks that he would hold a martial arts tournament.

In the ten days leading up to the Cell Games, Trunks spent every waking hour training, including a second trip into the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. The Cell Games itself was more Goku and Gohan's fight, so Trunks did very little.

After Cell's destruction at the hands of Gohan, Trunks returned to his own time. Shortly after returning, the androids struck another city. Trunks went out and finally, after almost two decades, ended their reign of terror. Trunks knew that his fight was not over, however, and not long afterwards, Cell attempted to hijack the time machine. This time, though, Trunks was ready. Using the power he had attained in the past, Trunks destroyed Cell and brought peace back to the world.

Personality: Due most likely to being the most recent descendant of a family of scientists, Trunks has an analytical nature. He refuses to take risks unless there is a chance that they will pay off, favors destroying the enemy before they can reach full strength, and all around tends to follow the most logical course of action. He also learns quickly from his mistakes--after his fight with Cell, he never goes beyond his base Super Saiyan level.

While nothing near the level of his mother or his grandfather, Trunks does display a knack for handling machines. He is an old pro with his time machine, programmed a GPS device to respond to a company satellite 20 years in the past, and recognized the blueprints of Android 17 for what they were.

However, Trunks does not always follow the most logical course of action. He can get quite emotional at times, and too often these emotions will cloud his judgment and lead to rash decisions, such as his leaping in to aid Vegeta in his fight with 18, thus causing 17 to intervene. This is especially the case when in his Super Saiyan form. He will even get cocky and mouth off to his enemy on occasion.

Despite all of this, Trunks shocks everyone with his everyday demeanor. He is radically different from either parent in that regard, and is in fact more like Gohan. He has a kind heart and is very polite. He dislikes fighting, but will not hesitate to fight when a crisis emerges. He will not hesitate to help a person in need, and is friendly to the people he meets.

Quirks? Well, first, Trunks has a larger-than-life appetite due to his Saiyan blood. He might be satisfied by an all-you-can-eat buffet, but he'd likely force them to close early due to the little remaining food supply. Secondly, Trunks is one of the few warriors in the Dragon Ball universe to carry and utilize a weapon--a sword in Trunks's case. He's perfectly capable of holding his own without it, but we've seen him use it with tremendous skill, such as when he confronted Frieza's forces on Earth.

Ginko - Trunks likes having another intelligent mind around. Ginko has also been pretty accepting of Trunks's abilities, rather than making a big deal about what he can do, which Trunks also appreciates. He hasn't talked to Ginko that much in recent days, but Trunks has a lot of respect for the man.
