People have been leaving recently. Graduating. People who have been here for as long as I have or longer.

[He pauses for a moment, remembering how often he's been mistaken for a new arrival due to how private he is. Best to clear it up:] ...I've been here for almost two years ( Read more... )

I don't think I have a choice.

...No. I wish I could say that it is. I'm comfortable enough here when the floods aren't hitting, but it isn't home.

I'm not planning on going anywhere. Here or there.

[He did have somewhere to go, but he got plot-blocked there so he's guessing that graduations means nowhere. :/]

I think you mentioned that the last time I questioned being here. I'm still sorry. I hope you figure it out.

This ship doesn't seem like a place anybody would wish to call their home indefinitely; I don't know why anyone would choose to stay.

Maybe if they have nowhere else to go.

Maybe. However, it seems as though this Admiral has enough power to do all kinds of things and with the apparent abundance of different worlds, surely there would be somewhere other than here a person could make his own.

I never thought of it that way, but who's to say that the Admiral hasn't thought this over? I don't put much faith in the Admiral, but I know that two of my previous wardens were dead in their own worlds. They both left the Barge, but I don't see them having much of a reason to go home, but they had to go somewhere. They can't have disappeared entirely.

To be honest, I'm not sure it would make a difference either way.

A different city doesn't make me a different person, Claire. Maybe I can be taught to forgive myself for my mistakes, but I can't be completely changed here. I just don't want to hit rock bottom again.

I'm going to stay after I graduate and become a Warden.

Do you have a reason?

Yes. I want to bring my best mate and his wife back from the dead.

...I had forgotten that wardens make an ultimatum with the Admiral. I suppose I'll have more of a reason to stay rather than just having no choice.
