Vocaloid Wiki - Hatsune Miku. These songs should be about as good as reading a couple chapters of a manga would be:
Rin Len La Ri Rin,
Disappearance of Hatsune Miku (though those events have not happened, the arrangements and personalities are pitch-perfect),
Melody.exe, and
Miku Miku ni shite ageru. [Headcanon in brackets, though some of the other stuff is technically based on fanon or loose interpretation of RL events.]
Character History: Miku was created by scientists at Crypton over the course of several years; inspired at the response given to their previous attempts at vocal androids, they worked very hard on the degree of realism to be incorporated in her design. [This particular model is one-of-a-kind and not available to the general public (they have to make do with a model more like this).] She was turned on in her final form three years ago, and lives with “Master”, a human who operates her, and her “siblings”, the other Crypton Vocaloids. Her services in singing are available to hire, but it took her a little over a year to really get a solid foothold in the business. By far Miku is more successful than any of her Vocaloid brethren, though she doesn’t hold this over them except playfully.
Miku became famous when, [on a particularly dull afternoon she had nothing better to do than watch Bleach and research memes,] and decided to record herself spinning a leek and singing “Ievan polka”. To her great surprise, the video went viral and soon tons of videos featuring her publicly-available version were popping up; before long she was even getting requests to sing for official music companies’ albums and popular online composers. [Even though she could get away with not putting much effort into her singing due to her fame and the excuse of being an android, she still puts her heart into every song. “Despite the fact a song already exists, a programmed toy can accept it just fine” is a lyric she holds close to her heart.]
Personality: Miku is defined primarily by her genki nature. Her mission in existence is to please everyone with her singing and general attitude. She is constantly seeking permission and praise for her actions, and it is easy to hurt her feelings by excluding her from group activities. [She sees things in zeroes and ones black and white (not literally), and is often confused when she cannot categorize something as such quickly. In particular, complex cases of ethics are sometimes beyond her comprehension.] Always assuming the best in people, she takes a while to believe that somebody is genuinely out to get her, and even longer to develop serious hostility. [However, it is difficult for her to act upon any such hostility, as she is programmed with the Three Laws (with some capacity for discretion as obedience is concerned). The worst thing she can really do to anyone is shout harshly, or cry.]
Aside from singing, Miku likes to dance, though she is nowhere near as skilled in that field. [She has no real ability to dance with a partner, however, and is therefore likely to be victim to totally adorable dancing lessons. Though she enjoys video games, most are not challenging to her because she can play them with the precision of, well, a machine. Despite being talkative, she has trouble holding a conversation without a topic. She cannot keep a secret unless it is impressed upon her that she mustn’t tell anybody else. Sometimes, she gets a little angsty about the whole “just a robot” thing, and never being able to have certain experiences like going to school or getting married.] These are relatively easy concerns to dispel, fortunately, and she will often distract herself to prevent thinking about it if the matter comes to mind.
Powers: Main concerns in this area are about being a
Ridiculously Human Robot. [The first post on her journal once the game starts will go into gratuitous, glorious detail on all of Miku’s specifications - though please note, anyone else wanting to play as a Vocaloid shouldn’t feel restricted by this, they could have implemented different systems into the others. High points: She doesn’t need to eat, blink, breathe though she can to avoid uncanny valley, she does need to sleep, and she will go into “economy mode” after three months if she is not maintained well.] None of her abilities are truly superhuman; she has no extreme strength or speed. Her main abnormal skill is a great degree of mechanical precision. This mostly applies to matters of fine motor control - she doesn’t trip, she dials the correct phone number without fail, and so on. She also can do mathematics and count at TI-86 levels. Though this would give her an advantage in combat, she is completely untrained in fighting and, as mentioned above, Three Laws compliant, so I don’t think this is something she should lose when entering Cariero, as it kind of comes with the robot territory. If this stuff doesn’t qualify as “powers” per se, I would like it if she gained the ability to make her C7 notes completely deafening to anyone around, including herself.
Appearance:
Offical standard picture.
Suitability/eligibility: I suppose this is somewhat of a concern for Miku, as she has technically only existed in her current form for three years. However, she was being developed, tested, and debugged for at least a year or two before that, so if the argument being used is chronological age, that would probably be more like five or six. The three years that she has been properly alive are not the coddled playtime a human being would experience during that time, but three years that everyone has expected mature behavior of her, and two of which she has had to deal with the difficulties of fame. Besides, white rooms where people in white coats look at you like you’re an object are exactly where she spent her testing stages, and almost a little comforting to her. Finally, one very important point: When I said above that singing and pleasing everyone were the mission of her existence, I meant that seriously. Those are the two things she was designed to do (the latter being the reason why she is a gynoid instead of a voice coming out of a box). On the deepest level, Miku is technically the “girl in a Chinese room”. Developing a nature contrary to her current personality, and being truly affected by the state of events, would take months of trauma.
The three magic words are: black, sheep, sissy. And I can testify that I didn’t steal them because the middle one comes from “WHO THE FUCK IS LINDA?”
Third-Person Sample: As soon as Miku woke up that morning, she was full of excitement. Today was her birthday! She got out of bed and picked out her clothes. There was no way she could just wear her uniform like it was any other day. She eagerly picked out a pink skirt, a green shirt, and twin flower-shaped hairclips. “I woke up in the morning, and there was exactly one person on my mind~ yes, it was you~” After checking her appearance in the mirror, she rushed downstairs and took a left into the kitchen. But no-one was there. Well, that was odd. There was always at least one person in the kitchen before her in the morning.
A note on the kitchen table caught her attention, and she read over it quickly. Apparently the twins had been called away for a concert at short notice, and Master of course had to accompany them. The timing was weird; she doubted whoever was hosting had really thought it through, but she guessed that it had just struck their fancy. The note itself was from Luka, who had gone out to the store because they were almost out of food, and hoped to be back soon.
Miku sighed as she took three leeks out of the pantry and began to peel them. She didn’t care that it wasn’t a very conventional breakfast; it was her birthday, and she didn’t have to worry about nutrition anyway. Master might not be pleased if he found out, but he deserved it, leaving her alone like this. Even delicious leeks weren’t enough to make her feel better about that.
Soon enough she had to clean off her plate and put it in the sink. There wasn’t any point to moping around. It was time to go and see what songs there were for her sing today. She wasn’t sure how well she would do without any guidance from her master, but these people had paid for a service and she was going to give it to them.
When she walked into the recording studio, only a dozen or so people were there to greet her. Miku tilted her head to one side, but decided not to ask why there were so few of them. She didn’t see any big name composers, hardly anyone she really knew; well, that was no reason not to be kind to them, right? She tried to keep that in mind as she looked over the songs. Most of them had only had a picture drawn to go with the video; a couple didn’t even plan to display the lyrics as they went. That was a little bothersome to her; at least half of these were clearly only going to post to Nico Nico Douga at all because it ws her birthday, so she wished they would put a little more effort into it. Then again, maybe they were just hoping they’d get more views because they tagged their video with “happy third birthday Miku”? No, that probably wouldn’t work anyway.
As she slogged through the songs one by one, she found herself losing enthusiasm. Her renditions were sounding hopelessly flat today without any guide to use; almost all of what she had been given to sing were just a lifeless configuration of notes, with no original nature to the lyrics, and only flat notes in an almost random order. Did they even care about whether the song was good? Did they just hope it would magically sound better if she sang it? She shook her head and went through the last on the list, “Encounter”. It was catchy enough, but needed a better picture…
The song ended and, with some casual good-byes, she left the recording studio. Now it was four o’clock. Surely somebody would have returned by now. “Hello!” she cried out as she entered the house. But… no response.
Miku almost felt like crying then. This was ridiculous! Luka at the very least should have come back from the store by now. And besides, why hadn’t any of her friends come over? Maybe they did while she was gone and she just missed them, but you’d think they would have left a message on her phone if that had happened, and there weren’t any. That was just pathetic! She didn’t really want presents, even, she was just sad that nobody had seemed to even want to see her.
It was hard to find much to do; putting away the dishes only took ten minutes, and she only managed to spend thirty minutes looking for dust in the house before giving up on finding any. Eventually Miku was just watching old videos of herself in Miku Miku Dance, looking for the flaws in her techniques. There were hours and hours of that stuff, fortunately, so that managed to keep her occupied until 9:30, when she heard the doorbell ring.
Miku threw the remote to the ground as she ran to the door. She just had to know what it was! Maybe something really terrible had happened to all her friends, and a messenger had come to tell her? Or perhaps they had gotten a massive record deal and couldn’t leave the negotiations until now? Or-
It turned out that Neru Akita was at the door. The other girl appeared somewhat unsettled, and her cell phone was entirely in her pocket. That meant something had to be wrong; it was actually turned off.
“Hi, Neru,” Miku said, trying to smile for her friend. “What’s up?”
“Oh, god, Miku, I’m so sorry!” Neru wailed. “We had all planned this great big surprise for you, but Meiko thought Kaito was going to pick you up and Kaito thought Leon was going to and Leon thought Lola would and by the time the chain looped back around to Meiko the rest of us had started up the karaoke contest by ourselves so we couldn’t send anyone until now but you can still come, you know, we can extend the rental on the room by a couple of hours-”
Miku sighed. “I see.” Well, the party could be fun, but… they had been so inconsiderate about everything. “You know… I don’t want you to have to go to that trouble, Akita Neru.”
She closed the door on her surprised friend and went up the stairs. The day had really just been a failure, hadn’t it? She should have called someone, asked what was up. Her friends hadn’t really abandoned her, but…
Miku changed out of her clothes into her nightgown and flopped down on the bed. At least tomorrow was sure to be a normal, much happier day.
First-Person Sample: Hi, everyone! At least, I’m saying “everyone”, but I think this might be a diary function, it isn’t really clear. I hope it’s a blog, because I’ve never had one before, and it seems like it would be fun. When I woke up today I was in a white room, so at first I thought “oh, maybe Crypton had to take me for a yearly check-up or upgrade or something”. But I’ve looked around the room a little and that doesn’t seem likely - there are only three outfits in the closet, and none of them is my uniform! That’s not like Crypton at all. It looks kind of like a hospital, but if that’s what’s going on, where are the doctors? And as far as I can tell I haven’t been hurt, either. So I don’t really know where I am at all. That’s kind of worrying, actually. I guess I’ll have to do some exploring and find out who’s in charge around here. Going out the front door is kind of scary, since I don’t know what’s out there. So instead I looked and the bathroom apparently connects to some other room like this! I haven’t gone through the bathroom door yet, since whoever’s in that room might still be asleep, but that seems like a great starting point. I’ll wait a little longer and then go to the
Anything else? Please go to the next entry in this journal if you want more specifics on how Miku works as a robot. I have no idea how that third person sample became over one thousand words long; I just knew that the arrival scenario wouldn’t work, so I took another idea and ran with it. Sorry that the first person sample is shorter; it’s not like I’m worse at first person than third necessarily, just that the idea for that part didn’t lend itself to being at such length. If there is any more gratuitous robot information you would like to have to decide whether to accept me, such as whether she always knows what time it is (yes) or how she blinks (algorithm generates a random number between 10 and 20 drawing from the amount of red in the visual input), please let me know. Also, I would prefer that if anyone else joins as a Vocaloid character this month, they’re at least roomed on the same floor?
