TM #246: What are the five steps to a successful negotiation?

Sep 03, 2008 13:52

What kind of question is this? It feels like an exam. Do I get so many points per correct answer?

I'm sure Obi-Wan could recite five steps in his sleep. He could probably come up with ten! He's better than I am at putting words together. That's why they call him The Negotiator.

Okay, let's see... you have to determine the source of the conflict. Listen to both sides. Suggest compromises. You can bet that if the Jedi have been called in to smooth things over, the problem probably isn't one that's easily resolved. You're gonna have to stay calm and keep both parties calm -- it helps to use the Force for that.

Sometimes one side is just so clearly right, though. Then you have to try to get the wrong side to see things the right way. You're not supposed to use Force persuasion... ideally... I'm telling you, though, it can be really helpful. (Don't tell Obi-Wan.) And if the wrong side just won't see reason, things can get ugly... then you might need to transition into aggressive negotiations. Again, don't tell Obi-Wan, but those are much more fun.

I shouldn't think that. I know it's better to talk things out, to come to a diplomatic resolution, no violence. But if that always worked, we wouldn't be in this kriffing war, now, would we.

Maybe the Jedi aren't such grand negotiators after all. We all question our place in this war (keepers of the peace, leading attacks?) but really, who else should do it? Just because we're not soldiers doesn't mean we're not suited for the job. Our Force abilities are a great asset in battle. We can single-handedly do what it takes a whole battalion of clones or droids to do -- and more efficiently, at that. It's only a matter of time before we win this war. And yes, of course violence isn't desired, but when it's the only language the Separatists seem to understand, the only thing that will force them to be loyal to the Republic, then so be it.

I guess I got off on a tangent there... is that five? I sense something... I need to get off here and aggressively negotiate with the two recon droids approaching our camp.
