Monday night, i saw Word Play. To quote my movie-going companion Tanya, "I'm a junkie for geek competitions," so i'm rounding out my week with Spellbound, and hoping the Netflix fairies will drop Word Wars in my mailbox this weekend

I saw Spellbound last year and was horrified. It was amazingly shot, and apparently they followed around a lot more kids than that to see where they'd all get, but the way these kids become idiot savants is just so sad.
I was curious about that. It seemed difficult to imagine they'd make a movie if none of the kids they were following make it close to the end. Then again, it would have certainly been an unexpected ending:-)

it was a mistake, actually. I rented it about a couple years ago thinking it was Hitchcock's Spellbound. It was the correct movie title, but a mistaken Hollywood Video employee put the wrong movie was into the DVD cover. Instead of bringing it back, we watched it and liked it a lot.
Come to think of it, we never even actually got the Hitchcock version. Wierd.
