don't forget to take a breath.

While his stomach was rumbling and hollow due to his refusal of breakfast earlier that day, Nate's nerves were making him feel too queasy to pick at his dinner. Where eating alone was normally routine, it was in that instant that the poor boy felt like a complete outcast for the first time in his life. It wasn't as though he sat down without ( Read more... )

Staring intently at the curly-haired boy in front of him, Shane was getting a little irritated. How anyone could not have noticed someone right in front of them, staring, was beyond Shane. The boy seemed really focused on his food and twirling his straw in his glass of soda, and Shane didn't see what was so fun about that. Really, the kid should be with other campers, having fun just like everyone else, not sitting by himself and looking miserable. Which, Shane would be with the group of friends he'd made already, but he'd noticed this kid by himself, and he felt bad, so he excused himself from his table and walked over here. Now, he was debating whether or not to just go back to his table and have a good time, but at the the same time, if he did that, he'd feel guilty. The boy was obviously nervous, and Shane could relate to that. He was the youngest camp counselor there, and he'd felt intimidated at first, as there were teenagers in his group older than him. Nate didn't pick up his head when he noticed someone was sitting across from him - he knew it wasn't Jason based on the fact that his voice was still standing out from the rest of the campers, so he just assumed someone was using the empty spot as a temporary holding place - but when that person didn't seem to be moving and actually opened their mouth to send him a greeting, Nate's entire body went still. He felt unbearably timid, but knew he couldn't ignore this boy, especially since he offered his full name ( ... )

When he wasn't noticed right away, Shane couldn't help but to stare at the curly-haired boy with his mouth open. He clenched his jaw shut right away though, his eyebrows furrowing together. He didn't want to just sit there and gawk at the other boy. But when he finally spoke, Shane's features softened up and his mouth broke out into a grin ( ... )

"Uhm. Nice to meet you, too. And I don't mind if you call me Nate," the boy answered awkwardly. No one had ever shortened his name before, though he had a feeling that if his social-circle branched out beyond the scope of his parents, someone would have thought of it sooner or later. The goofy smile on his face wouldn't fade away if his life depended on it, either, especially when Shane noticed their surnames both shared something in common. Which meant he not only had a nickname, but a reason for Shane to remember him. That was ground-breaking for Nathan, who politely nodded through the older boy's babbling and even sputtered out a small fit of laughter by the end of his tangent. "I'm not going to try to change your mind," he said lightly as he pushed his tray toward Shane, arching a brow up at him in order to silently ask if he wanted any of it ( ... )
