Using livejournal responsibly is as much an oxymoron as withdrawing from Iraq responsibility. You're supposed to do it anyway.

Oops, meant to write "responsibly" that second time. I'm a bit out of it myself.

Livejournal is like tight pants. One day, middle-aged spread will conspire with responsibility to make it a bad idea.

In the meantime, though, work it for all it's worth.

My use for LJ is, as I said to you in that commons line a while ago, that here I can express long, complete thoughts and force people to absorb them in their entirety before commenting on them. This is good for thoughts that would otherwise be cut off by irrelevant tangents, prurient giggles, or confident but confused objections.

I imagine this isn't really the "exhibitionism" you're talking about, though. If you mean displaying aspects of your personal life (which is what exhibitionism suggests to me--displaying "private" things if not physical ones), I can't offer much advice, since I rarely have much desire to post details of my personal life. I do talk about my personal life, but in very abstract terms. I guess this results from the fact that specific social situations have not caused much angst or joy for me recently. I'm usually most affected by long-term trends, which also tend to be the hardest things to explain in person because they're so abstracted from shared immediate experience.
