Unexpected is definitely the word to use, though if you're dealing with dangerous animals a lot, something like this was likely to happen.

Oh, wow. Even with his high-risk job I hadn't expected him to die. Like someone else pointed out - he seemed immortal. I feel really sorry for his wife. ;~;
