BSG is awesome

I just watched yesterday's episode and want to tell everyone that Battlestar Galactica is awesome. Yes, I knew this before this last episode, but wow... I felt like I actually cared about the characters. That battle scene was so cool and well done. It was on the level of Babylon 5, but with better special effects ( Read more... )

From the command deck: "Launch all vipers"

Heard from the launch tubes: "Well...this is going to be different"

My one frustration with BG is that it keeps superimposing modern politics onto the show. B5 did that and it was kind of cool, but I guess it gets kind of annoying after a while. Like it'd be cool if they made up there own politics.

Anyway, I've watched everyone of the shows so it must not bug me that much.

Umm... you do realize that all sci-fi superimposes modern politics onto the show. Sometiems they do a little older than modern, but it is really part of what makes Sci-Fi what it is. It's like a commentary on society.

Name a Sci-Fi show that didn't touch on politics in some way.

My opinion on this topic is actually pretty ambiguous. I'm not really up for a hot livejournal debate. ;-)

I would say that some sci fi is a political commentary, but other shows, books, short stories, etc are more about expressing a certain idea that is not necessarily related to politics. Like 'what if there was a society with no emotions?' or 'What would alien civilization that didn't see color be like?'. So it's sort of more like a subset then a rule. Would you agree?

But yeah, my feeling is that BG has been doing it alot and repeatedly. I love the show, its great actually, but sometimes it reaches a level of heavy handed cheesiness that makes me twist in my seat.

I agree, it is kind of a subset, rather than a rule. However, a fair number of the TV dramas tend to focus on politics now adays. I guess it is more of the continuing series however, like Stargate, Star Trek, B5, BSG, etc. Even The Twilight Zone did a lot of Political commentary, but using the "what if" scenarios to do so. Really, I guess Sci-Fi tries to just get people to think by building a fantasy world of sorts and depicting something.

I mean, even many novels and short stories hint at or blurt out political commentary. Some are more social commentary, but there is a fine line between the two.

Anyways, no need for the hot livejournal debate, since I tend to think we already agree with eachother. But, I do like livejournal posts that make me think on occasion.
