I cannot afford a DSLR. A Sony A100 seems to be the least expensive piece of hardware available. After adding the cost of lenses, a flash, and a remote shutter, the total cost would still approach a thousand dollars. My solution is to return to 35mm. The cost and inconvenience of film developing will be annoying, but still seems worthwhile. I ( Read more... )

Look for a used DSLR body. MUCH MUCH MUCH cheaper than brand new. And Much better than a high-end p&s camera.

Buy the lenses used as well. And you don't have to buy it all at once.

Finding good 35mm processing is getting harder and harder these days. :-(

I checked out KEH:
Sony: A100 body and 70mm lens for $415, a 200mm lens for $144, and a flash for $60. Total: $619.
Canon: Rebel body and 55mm lens for $364, a 250mm lens for $219, and a flash for $90. Total: $673.
Nikon: D40 body and 55mm lens for $364, a 200mm lens for $139, and a flash for $69. Total: $572.

So basically, I could buy a whole outfit for the price of a new camera and starter lens. Tempting, but that's still a lot of cash.

www.bhphoto.com is the best place to buy photo equipment. (Or check out adorama.com's used department.)

The A100 is a nice model. I have the A200 and I've gotten really great shots with it. (In fact, a photographer friend of mine thought I was shooting with the A700. haha!)

And just to note, the MD mount will not fit on the new Alpha series. The newer mounts for Minolta will fit on the Alphas, but not the MDs.
