If you _do_ buy a new Mac, you can just plug it into the old one and tell it to copy the data off the old one's hard disk by putting the old computer into "Firewire Target" mode. In this mode, the computer doesn't boot, so even if the OS is screwy and won't start things will still transfer fine.

That said, it's almost certainly possible to get the old one to boot again as well. Ask one of a multitude of people who know how to do such things to take a look at it it. (I think I'm free on Sunday...)

* exception: if your new computer is a current MacBook, it won't have a Firewire port, and this won't work. But since you're getting an iMac, this is irrelevant.

I didn't realize target mode bypassed the OS.

I've been having problems with the firewire bus overloading...which is why I've been shopping around for a new iMac. It would be nice if I could get the G5 working again...because then I could send it over to my Mom. It would be an upgrade over the old Mac Mini I bought her...that she's never used. If I keep plunking down new equipment...maybe she'll feel guilty enough and actually use it.

Actually...Sunday would work. We usually go out to see my Mom around 5pm...in Villa Park. I could haul it on by. We pass right by your house.

We usually bring Rerun with to my Mom's...but it should be nice enough to put him on a tie out. Would this work? I'm frustrated enough with it to consider tossing it out the window right now.

If you do come by, make sure to bring your Leopard media and, if you can find it, the Tiger media that came with the computer as well. I don't actually have a copy of Leopard, and I'm not sure the copy of Tiger that came with Kathleen's old iBook would work.

I have all my discs. One thing I'm anal about is keeping all my OS crap together in one place. :-)
