Two scrawny boys just barely showing signs of manhood scrambled down the hill, giggling madly. They raced down to the riverbank.
“Did you - ahahaha - see her face?” One of them spoke, falling backwards into the glass and staying there.
“M-mom is so - tee hee - gonna kill you - ahahaha,” The other tried to scold him, but failed, plopping beside his brother instead.
The two boys turned and stared at each other - at the messy black hair, lanky frames and ocean blue eyes. Unconsciously both raised their hands to pat their head, then grinned at each other.
“We should ask Mum to get rid of the mirror in our room,” Kei Trent said gleefully. “It’s almost useless anyway.”
“Ha! Says the one who uses it the most,” His twin brother James shot back. They giggled.
“That girl deserved it though.” Kei said thoughtfully, putting his hands behind his head and staring at the cloudy, afternoon sky. “Tagging along and acting like such a know-it-all…”
“Giggling, squealing…” James groaned in agreement. “Girls are so scary…”
“That’s because they’re always latching on to you!” Kei burst out laughing.
“It’s not funny!” His brother protested. “Remember that time when I was auditioning for the basketball team? There were at least twenty of them in the bleachers - and they were all staring at me!”
“Aww, you poor, poor soul.” Kei did not sound very sincere.
James glared at him. “Stop laughing!”
“Ahaha… Don’t worry, my dear, older brother,” He slung his arm over James’ shoulder. “Your little bro will help you with your woeful girl problems!”
“What, with your dating sim experience?” James deadpanned. “I’m sorry, but I think you would understand if I am not comforted by that at all.”
“Hey! Don’t underestimate the magic of dating sims!” Kei protested. Then his face grew serious. “But no, seriously. There’s no need to worry, Big J. I’ll always be here for you. Promise!”
James snorted. “Of course you’ll always be here for me. I’d kick your butt to Australia if you weren’t.” He couldn’t help but smile though. “And no worries, Little K. I’m sure you’ll get a girlfriend before I do.”
Kei bolted up, his face a look of complete horror.
“EW!” they cried simultaneously, and burst out laughing.
5 years later…
Mikan looks at you tearfully. “K-kei-kun… Do you really mean it?”
Tongue in between his teeth and eyes narrowed in concentration, Kei held up his stylus, ready to press.
> Well…
> Yes.
Yes, I mean it, he thought, and let his hand fall towards the screen.
WHAM!
“KEI!”
“WAAAH!” his hand jerked in shock.
“I-I knew it… you weren’t serious…”Mikan’s face falls.
“NOOOOOO!” he wailed. “It took me three weeks to get her to that level!”
“KEEEEEI!” his closet door jerked open. Kei flailed, and ended up tumbling to the carpeted floor.
“Ow!” he looked up to see his brother’s flushed face, eyes wide and panting heavily. “J-James? What the hell man, I nearly had her-“
“Dude. Dude. Dude.” James fidgeted, his eyes darting right and left. Kei stared.
“Whoa. Hold up big guy.” Kei sat up and turned off his DS. “What’s going on? Tell momma what’s the problem.”
James rolled his eyes, but made a visible effort to calm down. He sat beside his little brother. “It’s… Earlier, I…” he stammered, trying to find a way to start.
“Is this about that girl who went in our room?” Kei asked knowingly. James turned red. The little brother rolled his eyes. “What? Did you throw a basketball at her head or something?”
“No!” James glared at him. Then he sighed and buried his face in his knees. “Ehmnshuou.” He mumbled.
“Sorry, what was that?” Kei kept up the teasing note in his voice, to help his brother relax more. “Honey dear, momma can’t help you if she can’t hear you, you know.” He added a falsetto. There was a muffled laugh. Success! He grinned.
“Iaskedherout,” James blurted. The grin slipped off his face like a fish.
“Whoa.” He stared at his brother. “No way.”
“Yes way.”
“No. Way.”
James was grinning now, albeit a bit bashfully. “Yes way!”
“You! Ask her out?” Kei leaned back and burst out laughing. “Girl-phobic James asked her out! School hottie James Trent, the famous Etoile Vermeil of the Three Stars of Acadamie de Trois Etoiles just asked a girl out!”
“Shut up!” said Etoile Vermeil punched his brother in the shoulder, blushing madly. “You know I don’t like being called that!”
“That’s great!” Kei ignored him, jumping up and doing a little dance. “Big J’s all grown up! I feel so happy I could kiss you!”
“Please don’t.” James said tiredly. “Now will you please help me out?”
Kei paused. “Help you out with what?”
Helplessly, James spread out his arms, showing his sweaty basketball uniform. “What do I wear?”
“……”
Kei burst out laughing again.
James pouted, crossing his arms and glaring at his little brother. Finally, when Kei had stopped rolling on the floor, he spoke. “You done yet?”
“Ahaha… haha… yeah.” Kei sat up and grinned widely at his brother. “You serious?”
“Dead serious. Now please help me?” James pleaded.
“Alrighty then! Relax, Big J, Kei-ma’s gotcha!” He pulled James to his feet and pushed him to the bathroom. “Just get in there, take a shower, and I’ll handle everything. Heck, I’ll even order the flowers for you.”
“F-flowers?” James yelped.
“You weren’t seriously planning to just waltz in there without a gift, were you?” His brother’s silence was answer enough. He sighed. “See, this is why you need me.” He smiled at James before giving one last push and slamming the bathroom door closed behind him. “Right, now to pick those clothes…”
There was a pause, and a barely muffled voice. Kei halted in his footsteps. “Sorry, what was that?” he asked.
The door swung open a little. “Thanks man.”
Kei smiled. “No prob bro. Just like promised.”
