Women's Month Continued

Mar 14, 2006 16:02

I edited the userpics out of my last entry and am reposting them here, with some extra ones that I did. That's all, folks.

General Empowerment/Breast Cancer Awareness

I used Buffy in two of these icons because, hey, do we have a better media example of a strong woman? The quote "We can. We are forever. You could never hope to grasp the source of our power" comes from one of the fourth season episodes.

Celebrating Suffrage

The background the purple and yellow suffrage icon was actually taken from an advertisement or article for Alice Paul's suffragette parade. The woman in the picture is the famous "Woman on the Horse." "Iron Jawed Angels" was the term the media used in conjunction with the suffragettes. The picture is from the cover of the movie "Iron Jawed Angels."

Stop Domestic/Sexual Violence

The last two icons quote something a good, wonderful, strong friend of mine said last night. She's never been a victim of rape or sexual assault, but she has incredible insight into the thoughts and feelings of a victim/survivor. I adore her.

The Clothesline Project/Take Back the Night

The Clothesline Project is an international event. Survivors of sexual assault create t-shirts and other articles of clothing that express their emotions or some sort of message. The shirts are displayed for a series of days in a public place. Take Back the Night is a rally and march for women to gather and speak out against sexual violence. It is an international movement as well.

These images come from pictures, photos, stamps, screenshots, and flyers that have been posted on the internet.

P.S. Kelly, I just wanted to let you know you're the bomb. Check out the last two icons in the "Stop Domestic/Sexual Violence" section (if it's readable, anyway). I also used it on next week's poster for my hall project. You are one of the singularly most amaing young women I know. Just wanted to tell you that. ;)
