It sucked, but resources on the topic of BPD say that friends and family of those with the condition end up requiring therapy themselves. Some even experience Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
A good example: There's a well-named book on the subject of this particular mental illness called I Hate You, Don't Leave Me.

It ain't easy to literally and figuratively turn my back on a friend, but I asked if said person was getting help and received an affirmative reply. The way I see it, a therapist will be of much more help than I could possibly be, so there's no point in continuing to destroy my peace of mind to no end.
