And lo, it was declared the fiend should be vanquished.

It is done.

The bush is dead. I have killed the bush.
The bush will no longer attempt to stab any of the fine folks that visit my home

Suggestions for its replacement will be given all due consideration.

Foxglove is pretty. But don't let the kitties nibble on it. Rosemary seems to grow really well here too and it smells nice and you can eat it.

Yay!!

Ding dong, the stabbitiy is dead! Thanks!

PS - I suggest something nice smelling with pretty flowers. I wish hibiscus grew here - they're lovely.

Small flowering bushes are pretty, but can require more maintenance than you may be interested in putting in. Depending on the soil acidity and the exposure, I would recommend things like violets, pansies, bleeding hearts (one of my favorites) or some other low-profile flowers. Another option is fragrant herbs like the aforementioned rosemary, mint, basil, sage, cilantro, etc. (although I know from experience that the mint can get a little crazy if not clipped at least monthly). The herbs are practical and smell nice and usually don't require as much tending as other choices. They're also kitty-safe, to my knowledge.

A shrubbery!

Ok, compacta holly should work well up there. You just need to give it a trim every couple of years, tho.
