If it's ever NOT okay to have close friends outside your relationship, IMO that is a BIG RED WARNING SIGN that the relationship is not a healthy one.

I second that. A good relationship of any form would have your partner being one of your closest friends, but you should still have the ability to have close friends outside the relationship.
