It def happens to me where I will be so engrossed in reading a fic that I stay up way too late or put something else aside that I should be doing instead.
What I try to do with reading now is put longer fics on my kindle or ipad and then read them at they gym or while I'm exercising. That way, I'm doing something productive while reading and if I want to keep reading extra chapters I have to force myself to keep exercising.
If not, I usually read before bed and try to limit my time. It's really easy to just get swept in a really good book or fanfic. I hope you can find a good balance and don't have to keep leaving fandom for months at a time.
Thanks for this love! I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who stays up way too late to keep reading a fic!
I find I do read normal books a lot as well, but for some reason I have a much better sense of self control and the ability to put them down when it's getting late or time to get to work if I've been reading on the bus to work etc. It just seems to be when it comes to fandom I lose my ability to be sensible!
I read my flist once a day, and I bookmark longer fics to read later. I guess I don't go out searching for fics to read; if they pop up on my LJ friends-feed, I take note. Plus, I take Thursdays offline, sort of a weekly hiatus, which keeps me grounded.
Maybe you could impose a set amount of time for reading/writing on yourself? It may be difficult to stick to at first, but if you keep at it, it will become habit.
I like the comment about just reading your flist once a day and then just bookmarking fic for later!
I think I also need to make myself have a set "bed time" to help stop this, and learn to put it down when that time comes around (like a real book, even though it's a tablet/computer).
