Who Can Tell Me More About Cassandra Clare?

So I know The Mortal Instruments started life as Harry Potter fanfiction, but that's about it. Was anyone around when it was fanfiction and reading along? Was that her penname? Dare I say it, does anyone have a copy of the old works saved somewhere you can send me, just from pure interest's sake? Was it called the Draco Trilogy? I'm trying to work ( Read more... )

Here's the fanlore page of Cassandra Claire: https://fanlore.org/wiki/Cassandra_Claire

I am not sure whether The Draco Trilogy is still available anywhere. I don't think so. It was Harry & Draco friendship with some intense erotic overtones. Mainly, I think, the fic brought Draco into the center of HP fandom as a character that is cool and worth exploring in fanfic.

Thank you! I just spent literally like over an hour reading through everything on those pages! I used to be a big follower in fandom when it was big back in the early 2000's so I was curious to know if I'd ever read it. I don't think I would have though because I would have been a massive Harry/Draco lover by then and wouldn't of been interested in their fight for Hermione. The slash overtones probably would not have been enough to interest me!

I wouldn't be surprised if someone had a downloaded copy they've scurried away somewhere!

Fanlore is the best fandom resource ever. :)
I came late to H/D fandom, only in 2007. And I immediately looked for slash. But I read the first part of the Draco trilogy, and I did like her Draco characterisation.

As for the plagiarism charges against Cassandra: I never fact-checked the accusations myself, and fandom back then was quick to condemn people who filed off the serial numbers of their fanfic and published it. Many professional authors whom I respect have spoken on behalf of Cassandra Claire and denied the plagiarism charges. I doubt that today, when Rainbow Rowell can sell a book that is basically one big H/D fanfic, fandom would have come down that hard on Cassandra Claire.

I have a copy of the trilogy and can send it to you if you want. If you've read the Mortal Instruments, Jace, is pretty much a golden-haired, tawny-eyed copy of her Draco from the Draco Trilogy. There are certain passages that are copied word for word.

It's really not that special and very, very long, especially the third book. There's no slash in it at all, but I do believe this is where leather!pants Draco originated. Harry and Draco become best friends and brothers, Sirius is alive in this AU. The pairings if I remember are Harry/Hermione, Draco/Hermione, and Draco/Ginny.

Send me a pm with your email address if you're still interested.

I was around then. It was straight up plagiarism, word for word lifting of very long segments. Plus some really shady asking of money for some catastrophe that might have been a hoax. Fandom turned on her at that point, and she exited.

I will say this- her “original” writing she publishes now is not as good/witty as her fandom writing. Not sure why. Maybe because she can’t plagiarize, maybe she can’t world build, maybe she is limited by her editors on what content she can publish to young adults, maybe it’s not as fun anymore. But it’s as if someone not as good as she used to be is ghostwriting her content, it’s a shade of what she used to publish. I thought at some point she would write her own stuff, not a HP knock off, but it didn’t happen.

I don’t like her at all, but her fanfic (maybe because of the plagiarism) used to be some of the best.
