wow - some of the things you mention here i have spent a fair amount of time pondering myself - where did these thoughts come from for you? I'd like to talk with you about this if you're up for it sometime -
Wow, back on LJ in force, with all these introspective posts.
I've done hospice care, both for personal/family and as part of my job.
It is unbelievably humbling, to be in the presence of a life about to end. It really puts everything in perspective.
A relationship centered around, and tempered by, an impending death, can indeed continue to develop, so long as you allow it to. I was most definitely changed by my experiences in virginia, and they continue to effect my work and professional decisions.
A Life, is nothing more than a collection of memories, either in that person's head, or distributed amongst the people he has had contact with. Just because someone dies, doesn't mean you can't continue to interact with, and learn from, those memories.
In my experience, Hospice workers can become remarkably jaded. The Hospice Care we worked with for my father, well didn't really seem to care. They were numb and mechanical. The presence of so much death and sadness must really build up after a time.
I must say, that while, yes a life is a collection of memories, death is so much more. Because no where that I look in this world, will I ever find my father.
