I heard the news from Sarah on Monday (who heard from Mikel, I think) and later heard from Scott when he bumped into us Wednesday night. I still haven't heard anything more about what happened or if the family has asked us to make donations somewhere specifically in his memory. Do you/does anyone know what happened or if there is anything that we can do?

None of you know me, but I have known Kapali and his family since we were 10 years old (17 years). I just wanted to clarify a couple of things just for you all to know so you can pass the word along. Kapali has always been a gregarious, charismatic individual who NEVER engaged in any sort of violence, which held true until the day he died. The newspaper articles are false. They are biased and untrue and have been editorialized to reflect small town thinking and to make a story more interesting. The truth is that Kapali NEVER touched the girl or guy. He was not a fighter. He was punched twice by Christopher Brett Pennington, which resulted in severe head trauma to the brain causing Kapali's untimely death. There have been no requests for any sort of donation to a charity. As you can imagine, the family and close friends are in deep mourning and grief. However, if I could ask of you, please clarify the story so people know what really happened and who Kapali really was. Thank you, Sumita

In regards to questions of donations and such:

The Swamy family is in the process of creating a scholarship in Kapali's name at Birmingham Southern College. We will make further announcements as we work out the details and the scholarship fund has been created.

Thanks for the interest in this endeavor, and for the good wishes for the Swamy family.

Sincerely,
Ian Dorward
(brother-in-law)
