Fic: Broken [3/?]

A/N: I know I just updated yesterday but I got a big hit of inspiration late last night. Also, there’s no smut in this chapter, since I’m expanding the story I thought I should put in some kind of plot line. Again, let me know what you think!

“So,” Damon said later that afternoon, “Have you heard anything from your mother?”
Caroline avoided his gaze, but he knew what that meant. This was something that she just didn’t want to talk about, but he was determined.

He cocked his head to the side and watched her closely. He gave her a look that he knew would drive her crazy.

“No,” she admitted finally. “I don’t think she wants to talk to me.”

He almost wondered if Liz would ever talk to her daughter again. And, now that she knew, why hadn’t she tried to kill her yet?

“I wonder if your mom will be able to do it,” Damon said, thinking out loud. Caroline gave him an incredulous look.

“Huh?”

“I was just thinking out loud,” he said, trying to explain himself. She just stared.

He shrugged, “Well, okay. I was just thinking that your mom wouldn’t be able to kill you. She loves you too much.”

“Uh huh,” she said slowly. “My mom was raised with this vampire crap. She hates them, with a vengeance. She wants all of them dead. They are no good, blah, blah, blah…” she let her voice drift off. She felt like she was on the verge of crying, and really did not want to. She was now a creature that her mother hated more than anything.

“I know that this may seem like an emotional roller coaster to you,” Damon said softly, coming closer to her, “but you need to understand that you’re feeling everything intensified. That’s what happens when you’re a vampire.”

She rolled her eyes, “Yeah, I know. Stefan gave me the talk already.” The way that she said ‘the talk’, it made him burst out laughing.

“Is something funny?” she asked him, and he just shook his head.

“Sorry, Care, but that was just priceless.” It felt really good to laugh - Damon hadn’t laughed in what seemed like too long.

“C’mon, get dressed,” he said after a moment, throwing clothes at her. “We told Elena we’d meet her, Bonnie and Stefan. I don’t want to be late.”

Caroline raised an eyebrow, “Uh, what? Since when are you afraid to be a little late?”
He shrugged, “I don’t know. I just don’t want to be late.”

She got dressed in record time, and Damon could’ve sworn that she used her vampire speed. She appeared in his room wearing jeans and a plain t-shirt. Even in jeans and a t-shirt, she looked so beautiful to him, and he contemplated for a moment not going over to Elena’s, and just keep the both of them home. There was plenty that they could do here. But, both Caroline and Damon had promised that they’d be there, so he didn’t see any way out of it.

“Hey, Damon! Caroline?” Stefan’s voice came from down the hall, but he was walking. A few moments later, Stefan knocked on Damon’s door, “You guys decent?”

Damon contemplated saying something really sarcastic, but he knew that Caroline was not in the mood for that. So he kept his mouth shut as Stefan slowly opened the door.

Stefan appeared inside the room and looked at them both. They were the kind of couple that were so much in love that it made you want to vomit. Stefan chuckled, wondering if Damon had realized that yet.

“And you’re here because…” Damon prompted him, and Stefan gave him a look before finishing, “Elena wants to know what’s taking so damn long.”

“That sounds like Elena. Where are we having this thing?” Caroline asked, trying to sound chipper, although all the emotional stuff she was going through was just killing her inside.

“At Elena’s house. She thought that might be a better place to have it.”

“Y’know, Stefan, I really don’t want to do this. It’s too soon after everything that’s been going on…”

“Don’t listen to her, Stef,” Damon intercepted, “she just is a little emotional right now. We’d love to go and see Elena. Right, Caroline?”

She rubbed a hand over her face, and then smiled, although Stefan could see how fake it was, “Yeah, sure. Elena’s my best friend.”

As they walked up to the Gilbert house, Caroline leaned over to Damon and whispered, “Why are we doing this again?”

He shrugged, “Because Elena’s your best friend, and she wanted something to take everyone’s mind off of the shitty things that are happening right now.” He took her hand, “I know that you’ve got shitty luck right now, Care, but you can at least do this for Elena.”

She sighed, “But she’s making dinner. Who eats dinner anymore?”

“Well, there’s Elena. And Bonnie. And Jeremy. And y’know, Caroline, we can eat. It just doesn’t do much for us.”

Caroline shrugged, “I don’t know. I’ve got bigger things on my mind right now…”

Damon stopped walking and turned to her, grabbing her shoulders so she was facing him, “Knock this crap off, Caroline. Life really isn’t that bad.”

“That’s what you think,” she scoffed. “My mother wants to kill me.”

“Yeah, and my father actually killed me. Ever wonder how I became a vampire in the first place?”

A moment passed and it was so quiet that you could hear a pin drop. Her face softened, realizing the truth in his statement. Life really isn’t that bad.

“Really? He killed you?” Her voice was soft, and he almost didn’t hear what she said. He probably wouldn’t have heard it if he didn’t have vampire hearing.

“Yes, Caroline. He really did. Now, realize, it could be worse.”

He let go of her and, grabbing her hand, they made their way up to Elena’s house. Maybe,
just maybe it wasn’t going to be so bad after all.
