Bow in hand, maple between the knees, and he thinks, not for the first time, that this may be the most successful relationship he’s ever had, and that it is and remains unrivalled for the most significant.

Of course Matthew kept an eye on Gabe's work. On his no-shows and disappearances. He never went to a show but he knew if Gabe missed one or skipped a practice. And he was tired of bothering to pull strings. Wasn't sure why he ever did to begin with. He probably could have let Gabe run himself into the ground and come crawling back, but he had never exactly been patient.

"Where the fuck are you."

The lack of loud music in the background gave him a fairly good guess. This call might not have happened for another week, but then of all the people to run into-

He suppressed a growl and shoved the rest of his day to the side.

"I'm coming over. Stay there." And the command in his voice is nearly venomous, definitely dangerous. He doesn't even give much time for a reply before he's ending the call and getting into his car.

The party has to end sometime, all right. And as far as Matthew's concerned, it's doing so now.

Gabe has no intention of staying anywhere. Certainly no intention of obeying an order to stay anywhere. Matthew, as far as he was concerned, in his drug fucked and drunken mood, could go give his orders to some other asshole he hooked up with on Craigslist.

Craigslist.

The whole thing made Gabe laugh a little. A lot. But everything was funny right now.

But then someone has ordered another round of drinks and someone else says to come into the bathroom for a line - and three lines and two vodkas later he's forgotten he'd meant to leave. Someone's passing around the doxy, the whole thing has turned into more of a party than it was meant to be -

It always does. That's the problem. It always does.

When Matthew shows up, it takes very little to get through to Gabe. Everyone there was drunk, drugged, or both, and it was merely a matter of finding the fucked up idiot he was looking for among them that was the problem.

It didn't take him as long to find Gabe as he had really expected it might have.

When he does, there's no glares, no growled orders or speeches. He just grabs Gabe roughly by his arm and drags him off whatever surface he's currently occupying and onto his feet.

"Come on, Gabe." His voice is light, low and close to his ear. "You're missing your shows." It's not a threat or an accusation. Not even a command yet. Easy conversation like he's just the friend urging the other man to call it a night.

That's not what this is at all.

It's the coke that does it, that puts him in the mood to do it, though the booze and doxy makes sure he doesn't do much damage in the attempt. As soon as Matthew's grip on his arm registers Gabe's pushing him as hard as he can, pushing him away ( ... )
