The Sky is Falling pt.4

The day was crisp and cold. The snow was perfect for skiing. And for running around chasing birds and snowballs, and snuffling through the snow with your nose if you were Eneru. A few flurries lingered in the air, but the sun had burst through, chasing the clouds away, and now shone brightly.

Yu and Kamui lay curled together sharing a sunny spot on the veranda and watched Eneru snuffle through the light powder looking for a bone he’d left outside last summer, and hoping it was still around somewhere. It should be perfectly aged by now.

”I think the bone’s over under those trees by the fence,” Yu called out.

”What? Oh!” Eneru shook the snow off his nose. Yu had told him last night that he would let him know when it was time. This must be it. He yipped happily at a bird on the fence as he scampered across the garden toward the tall pines.

”What’s he doing?” Kamui asked as he sprawled out, hogging the sunny spot.

Yu sat up straight. ”He thinks he’s going to be able to find a bone he left here last summer.”

”Are you serious?” Kamui stood up and yawned. ”I better go ‘help’ him look.” He jumped off the veranda and looked behind him. ”You coming, Yu?”

You stretched his legs gingerly. ”Nah. I think I’ll pass. This cold is bothering my leg.”

Kamui shook his head. ”Ok, but you’re gonna miss the fun.” He turned back toward the puppy, crouched down in the snow, back legs twitching as he prepared to pounce.

As soon as Kamui’s attention was diverted Yu snuck off the porch, and through the bushes to the trees. He climbed the tree behind Eneru easily and crouched in the shadows of the snow-covered branches.

”3, 2, 1, GO!” Kamui darted across the garden and leaped over the the startled puppy. He landed gracefully in the shade of the tree and turned around to watch the little dog pick himself up out of the snow and shake off. ”Find what you’re looking for, Ene-tan?” Kamui smirked.

”Not yet, but I will,” the puppy retorted.

Just then Yu jumped carefully from the branch he was sitting on to the one below. All the snow that was piled on the branches fell directly onto the smirking tuxedo cat.

Kamui shook himself violently. ”Foo, bleh!”

”The sky is falling! The sky is falling!” Eneru yipped happily as he danced in circles.

Kamui turned to see what happened, ”What… Yu?”

”Paybacks, Kamui,” Yu purred, ”paybacks.”
