Comes the call..

Jan 05, 2010 13:43

These things began, as they have before and will again, in a phone call. She recognized the number, and as she picked up, she frowned. "What's wrong, Jon?"

FBI Special Agent Jonathan Crane sounded tense. "Eiko. Someone kidnapped Makovich. We've been given special authority to work on this. I'm formally requesting your help under that authority. How fast can you get here?"

"Get me a room at the Plaza, call me back with the room number, and-"

"I'm there, room 2804."

Eiko hung up, and PINned. Jon started, but didn't draw. Eiko was wearing a coverall with pockets sewn all over it, holding bits and piece of strange gear. As he watched, the special consultant ID he'd gotten for her materialized around her neck, and then a field kit settled in on the bed. She snagged it and put it over her shoulder.

"...that was faster than I expected." He sat down, his hands shaking a little. "How do you get USED to that?"

"Years of practice, literally."

Jon nodded, then handed her a file. "They broke into his house while his wife was away and took him. There's blood spatter that's being typed now, one bootprint in the garden, and there was a bullet recovered." His expression went from dark to grim. "The bullet's from a .40 pistol, and the initial tests indicate it's probably a SIG."

Eiko looked up from the file. "Someone wants to make it look like someone in the Secret Service did this, if you're suspicious?"

There was a knock at the door. Jon drew his pistol, and looked at Eiko. She'd finished clipping things together to form a small, dual-barreled device that she held with confidence - and skill, he noted, as she knew where to not point it. He checked the eyehole, then put his gun away and opened the door.

"Seeley, thank God, I was-" Jon was cut off as he saw the shotgun pointed at him. With the door out of the way it would kill him immediately...

...unless a wave of pale light passed through him, causing Seeley to drop the shotgun and fall over in a seizure; the TV set and the lamp and his own cellphone to stop working.

"What the hell was that?" Jon yelled, his own calm destroyed by nearly getting blown away.

"EMP." She handed him the field kit, then grabbed his hand, pulled him over to the twitching Seeley, and put her foot on it. "Close your eyes. Some people find it disconcerting to have their eyes open during a transition."

She was right, he thought. Watching the world disappear in a blue shimmer, then reappear as something completely different WAS disconcerting.

Of course, Jon continued to ponder, having Seeley Booth stare at himself in horror made up for a lot of it.

"Okay, what the HELL is going on here?" Seeley yelled. Everyone else had turned and was moving their way.

"It appears that Dr. Takashima is more than she appears to be," Zach said. "Even considering her exceptional physiognomy."

Jack Hodgins proceeded to use an axe to decapitate the Seeley Booth on the ground. "We had a Jon Crane come in trying to kill someone here." The head, apparently almost solid plastic, bounced a few feet, then spun to a stop.

"Okay, okay, I want to know how the hell you got in here. There was a flash of light and then you're here! What's going on?"

Eiko paused. "Uh. Green Lantern ring?" She displayed the hand with her wedding ring on it; nothing on it was green at all. "Wrong pants. Okay. Quick summary: I have access to technology that lets me teleport, no I will not share it because I think everyone on earth being able to teleport would be a bad thing; I only used it now because it was an emergency."

"That's very logical," Temperance Brennan's voice came from a corner, where she emerged, followed by Camille, Angela, and a young man she didn't rcognize; 'Bones' was the only one armed at all, and with a pistol. "I can't imagine the possible anthropoligical pollution unrestricted travel would cause."

"Yeah, great," the young man said, "but what about the evil Ken and Barbie dolls, what's up with them?"

"Eiko Takashima, this is Dr. Lance Sweets. He's a headshrinker, she's a.... what exactly are you, anyway?"

"Mad scientist," she said absently, kneeling down to look at the neck of the booth, a reply that caused Jack and Angela to chuckle, Zack and Temperance to look at her oddly, and the rest of them to exchange looks of 'we'll deal with this later'. "Huh," she said after a moment, "Auton."

"...the Nestene Conciousness is invading Earth?" Everyone except Eiko turned to look at Zack, who looked unconfortable at the attention.

"Yes," she replied, "but I called a friend."

There was a whirring, grinding noise as an old Space Invaders machine materialized in the Jeffersonian Institution labs. The side of it swung open, and a young woman of South Asian extraction, with bouncy black hair, a t-shirt marked with equations, blue jeans, boots and a denim jacket hopped out.

"You called, mum?"

With all four Takashimas (Isis called in, and Bastet showing up on her own), the Nestene Conciousness didn't stand a chance. People were rescued, the plan was foiled, and the Nestene kicked off of Earth.

"So," Temperance said slowly, "you have two daughters who know how to travel through time, and came back in time to help you with this. Isn't that going to cause problems?"

"No idea," Eiko said, after swallowing some lo mein, "I mean, predestination paradox and all, but then there's timeline splitting and a lot of other things. Amelia's actually educated in all of this and keeps telling me I shouldn't worry."

Jack, Seeley, Jon and Sweets were all passing around a shotglass and a bottle of schapps, mentioning how much this was giving them a headache.

Angela was leaning back in her chair. "I dunno, it's kind of cool to know your kids grow up to be... well... interesting."

Eiko grinned at Angela. "Look at their moms. Could they be anything more? But hold on." She was about to bang on the table, but realized that was pretty useless with chopsticks. Therefore, she picked up some of the spares and threw them at people until she had their attentions.

"I could wipe out your memories about what happened today, but I won't, because that would be really rude. Instead... please keep quiet about this. You can talk about it amongst yourselves, but not with people outside this group. There's a lot of questions that would be raised, and... right now the world is not ready for it. I'm willing to answer a lot of your questions, but there's some things I really can't go into, because - and I'm not trying to sound obnoxious here - it's not something a lot of people are ready for."

"I have one very important question to ask you, Dr. Takashima," Zach interjected.

"Yes, Zach?" Eiko replied, as Seeley covered his eyes as if he had a sudden headache.

"Are you picking up the tab for dinner, as you probably should after causing all this psychological damage to less-evolved minds?"

As everyone burst into laughter, Eiko put a black rectangle of plastic on the table.
